Research and Program Coordinator: Center for the History of Collecting in America at The Frick Collection

The Frick Collection is an art museum consisting of more than 1,100 works of art from the 13th to the 19th century, displayed in the intimate surroundings of the former home of Henry Clay Frick. The residence, with its furnishings and works of art, has been open to the public since 1935. It is one of the world’s most perfect museums; its sister research institution the Frick Art Reference Library is of equal distinction. The Frick Art Reference Library, one of the world’s leading centers for research in the history of art, was founded in 1920 by Miss Helen Clay Frick (1888-1984) to further the goals of “encouraging and developing the study of the fine arts and of advancing the general knowledge of ‘kindred subjects’.” The Library became a division of the The Frick Collection in 1984. The Center for the History of Collecting in America, housed in the Frick Art Reference Library, encompasses Academic, Scholars, Research, and Public programs.
* Job Summary *
Oversight of the research and data entry for online research tools, such as the Directory of Dealers’ and Collectors’ Archives. This involves researching sources of information; coordinating the gathering of information with the Center’s counterparts at institutions such as the Getty Research Institute, the Clark Art Institute and the Archives of American Art; supervising two part-time staff members who work primarily on researching and entering data for the Directory and possibly other online research tools yet to be developed. Working with the Center’s Director on coordinating public programs such as symposia and colloquia.
Administering the application and review process for fellowships granted by the Center. Occasional administrative duties relating to the academic programs shared by the Center and area colleges and universities.
* Qualifications *
1. MA in the History of Art required; PhD preferred.
2. Strong interest in the field of the history of collecting,
including aspects of cultural history that the field embraces.
3. Computer literacy in a Windows environment/Microsoft Office Suite.
4. Supervisory experience.
5. Excellent communications skills.

Library Hi Tech, Call for Papers

whose focus will be on information organization futures. The editor of
this special issue is looking for innovative and interesting ways that
libraries are using the structured metadata in their OPACs, to provide
new and exciting ways to interact and use library collections and
services for their users. Opinion pieces on this topic are welcome, as
well as uses of new technologies and user features such as 2D and 3D
information visualization, social tagging/software, integration with
other structured metadata sources, or search interfaces that combine
both analog and electronic resources in unique ways, are of interest to
the editor. Software prototypes or projects which help users to
manipulate data, and/or personalize data, are also welcome.
If you are interested in submitting an article, please send a short
proposal, discussing the topic and a suggested title, to the email below
by March 30, 2007. Draft articles are due to the editor by October 1,
2007. Inquiries and questions are also welcome.
