Blogs = Serials?
Posted: April 30, 2007 Filed under: ArLiSNAP, Blogs, Cataloging, News 3 Comments »After all our talk of blogs and blogging in Atlanta, I was interested in a recent post on the (very new) Library of Congress Blog.
It seems that at least some folks over at the Library of Congress consider (corporate) blogs to be serials, and may already be assigning ISSN numbers to them.
There’s an interesting discussion going on over there, including some mentions of an IBSN (Internet Blog Serial Number). Is ArLiSNAP a serial? Should it have an ISSN? An IBSN (http://ibsn.org/register.php)? I thought about going ahead and registering us for an IBSN, but then wondered what that would imply about ArLiSNAP as a “publication”, when I tend to think of it more as a community. Your thoughts?

M-LEARN, a new student group at Pratt
Posted: April 30, 2007 Filed under: Museum Librarianship, Museums, News, Student Organizations Comments OffWe are pleased to officially announce M-LEARN, a new Library and Information Studies student group at Pratt.
M-LEARN (Museum Library Education and Research Network) at Pratt Institution’s School of Information and Library Science (SILS) shall promote the professional and social growth of its members and support the School of Information and Library Science at Pratt Institution. It will provide Pratt students with the opportunity to explore issues relating to museum collections, development, maintenance, conservation, and preservation of the humanities, sciences, visual and performing arts. M-Learn will encourage professional networking within the fields of museum librarianship, visual and digital resources, achieves, cultural informatics and arts libraries, and will actively promote involvement in professional activities beyond the classroom through lectures, workshops, visits to local collections, special events, and liaison with regional and national associations and networking with New York City universities, museums, archives, and libraries.
M-Learn endeavors to explore and understand in greater depth museum librarianship in all of its form and function. It is necessary for students who are interested in the field of museum librarianship to have an interest group that will build connection, relationships, and lesions with professionals and organization in this field. The association will provide a vital outlet for the students to address the various issues in Museum Librarianship through network and dialogue. This student association will address the needs of museum libraries and information professionals and support the advancement of the profession, pursuing partnerships with other professional organizations, higher education organizations, and national forums. While advancing the social and professional growth of students, Pratt, and SILS, M-LEARN also offers members the chance to combine practical and theoretical experiences in museum librarianship with that of the collection, preservation, and exhibiting element of museums and libraries.
This association will offer students learning experiences first hand from professionals in the field. The association will prepare Pratt’s students for the upcoming realities in their careers and build relationships with other professionals already active in these fields. We plan to hold monthly meetings as well as monthly events. The aim of these meetings will be to discuss activities, events, plan trips to different museums, achieves, libraries, and have lecturers from various organizations, museums, libraries, and universities to come and speak. In addition, we plan a to create a website to post new, events, links, etc. and we plan to create a blog where students can continue to discuss various issues in Museum Libraries. Moreover, we will encourage students to join regional and national associations. M-Learn will also actively promote open communication between the Pratt community, museum and library communities and other organizations throughout New York City. It is vital to have an organization within Pratt for the students in which they can network, engage in discussions, attend lectures and participate in trips with other professionals in the field of Museum Librarianship.
Since Pratt is the first Masters in Library Science program in North America to offer a Museum Library Certificate, it brings to the forefront the growing commonalities between museum and research libraries evidenced by expanding roles for librarians in education and outreach, digital resources and services, and information systems. Importantly, its curriculum transforms the education of museum librarians by defining the full range of knowledge and skills librarians will need to advance the mission of librarianship in museums, art libraries and cultural institutions. All Pratt students who are interested in Museum Librarianship are welcome to join and assist in the establishment and continuation of this dynamic and vital student organization.
Sincerely,
Nicholas C. Jackson

ArLiSNAP meeting in Atlanta
Posted: April 28, 2007 Filed under: 2007 ARLIS/NA Conference Atlanta, ArLiSNAP 1 Comment »The Student Affairs Discussion Group met in Atlanta on Friday, April 27. The following is a summary of the topics addressed at the meeting.
Sarah Carter began the meeting by introducing herself as the outgoing Co-Moderator, and introducing Rebecca Cooper as the incoming Co-Moderator. Co-Moderators serve a term of two years, and overlap by one year. The continuing Co-Moderator, Megan Macken, was unable to attend. Other present members also introduced themselves.
(1) Announcements:
The cafepress site is up, with many new ArLiSNAP items for sale at cost. Check it out! (just go to www.cafepress.com and search for “arlisnap”)
A reminder that there are three sessions at the conference sponsored by the Student Affairs Discussion Group.
(2) Session Proposals
Members were asked for suggestions for sessions or conference activities that they would like to be involved in for next year. Several ideas were discussed. A separate blog post will appear to continue discussion on these ideas, which included a Next-Gen OPACS session, a “wisdom of crowds” session, continuing the New Voices session, supporting the Resume Review workshop, encouraging more job postings/interviews, and getting involved in poster sessions.
(3) The proposal for a Social Networking Interest Group in ARLIS/NA
Members discussed Sherman Clarke’s recent suggestion on ARLIS-L to form a Social Networking Interest Group. Although it was agreed that the Student Affairs Discussion Group is active in this area, it was decided that it would be best to wait to see what came of the idea before deciding exactly how we would get involved. The suggestion was made that if the group is formed, it may be appropriate for us to appoint a liaison or representative.
(4) ArLiSNAP
Members were asked for critiques/ideas about ArLiSNAP. It was discussed that some of our new members had not explored it fully, and that some of the general ARLIS/NA membership may not have the skills to feel comfortable with the blogging format. It was suggested to create a very basic “blogging 101″ introduction so that new visitors could learn a bit about the format and how to use it, as well as blogging etiquette. It was also suggested that we update the YouTube video with fresh content from the current year, and that we perhaps author a podcast as well. If you have other ideas, please post them in the soon-to-appear suggestions post.
(5) Name Change
There was discussion as to whether ArLiSNAP was synonymous with the Student Affairs Discussion Group. Some members mentioned that they did not realize that the core group of participants were the same. Others commented that the name “Student Affairs Discussion Group” is misleading, and seems to imply only student involvement, or perhaps some sort of academic administration role. It was determined that “ArLiSNAP” better represents the group, and could refer equally well to our face-to-face and online community components. A vote was taken, and a unanimous decision was made to change our name to ArLiSNAP.
(5) New Projects
Three new projects were discussed for the group for the coming year.
- Revising the existing publication on Art Librarianship educational opportunities, which will give ARLIS/NA and our group a better understanding of the degrees/tracks/coursework that exists in ALA accredited institutions to prepare the next generation of Art Librarians. Those interested in this project can leave a comment and let us know!
- Doing a study of student support and aid available in local chapters. This will help to give us an idea of whether we may need to start an initiative to be sure that students can get the support (financial, mentoring, etc.) they need from local resources. It will also allow us to determine whether there are recommendations we can make to ARLIS/NA in general, including the possibility of starting student chapters.
- Analyzing our goals and taking a hard look at where we want to go and the effect that structural/administrative changes might have on this group. It was acknowleged that our current status as an “unofficial” group seems conducive to our identity as a social, collaborative, and innovative community. It was also noted that the structure of ARLIS/NA is changing, and may re-arrange itself in coming months.
As there was no further business, the meeting was concluded.
If you were unable to attend the meeting, or if you have further thoughts, please feel free to comment or start a new thread to discuss your suggestions!
Following the meeting, participants met up with a broader group of students, new professionals, and seasoned ARLIS/NA members to attend the fantastic pub crawl!

Don’t Miss Hot Topics on Sunday in Atlanta!
Posted: April 25, 2007 Filed under: 2007 ARLIS/NA Conference Atlanta, Opportunities: Conferences Comments OffThe Hot Topics/AskARLIS session will occur at 9am on Sunday, April 29th.
The format for this session is rather unusual, in that the content and direction of the session is driven by the audience! To stir up the discussion, we’ll have a few folks present to “introduce” technologies and get the ball rolling and some other “experts” in the crowd.
It is our hope that everyone who comes to the session will be ready to share their questions, comments, and vision concerning the role of technology in art libraries. Whether you’re already a tech guru, or whether you can’t quite jump on the blogging bandwagon yet, we need you to speak up!
So… grab a cup of coffee and get to the Hot Topics session on Sunday! We can’t wait to see what happens when ARLIS asks ARLIS about some of the hottest topics out there!

Art is all about visual pleasure, about the sugar rush we get when eye connects to brain, right? Video over the internet is also about feeding the eye and the brain, right? So you’d think contemporary art institutions would be right there at the cutting edge of the internet-video revolution, manning the cameras, vlogging, sharing their visual delights with the world? Motivating us, giving us eye candy for our iPods, right?
Wrong.
