Book Shelf View: Possibilities for Virtual Stacks Browsing
Posted: September 14, 2007 Filed under: Archival Management, Catalogs/OPACs, Visual Resources, Web 2.0 1 Comment »Imagine keyword searching through a book database, only the results come back as a picture of library stacks where the book is highlighted in context, where serendipity and browsing could happen. Read more…
Above is a quote from an O’Reilly Radar Blog post. Maybe someday image librarians will manage digital images of the stacks too. One potential problem with this idea — when would all the books be on the shelves so that you could take a complete picture of your library’s holdings? Have any of you ever tried Delicious Library (mentioned in a comment at the bottom of Book Shelf View post)?

Art Documentation Call for Papers
Posted: September 14, 2007 Filed under: Opportunities: Calls for Papers Comments OffArt Documentation editors are seeking articles both for the Spring 2008 and Fall 2008 issues. We would like to hear from authors who have written, or plan to write, articles on topics of broad relevance to our profession.
For the Spring 2008 issue, we are particularly interested in papers that only need fine tuning or editing for publication; the preliminary deadline is October 15, 2007. We are also seeking proposals for the new “Between the Lines” feature that will appear in each issue of Art Documentation. These articles should be 1,500-2,500 words in length and take the form of an in-depth review of a significant publication, a comparative review featuring related publications, or a bibliographic essay.
For the Fall 2008 issue, please send us your ideas and abstracts for articles concerning research or projects on which you are working, professional issues about which you are passionate, or other subjects related to art librarianship and visual resources curatorship. The preliminary deadline for this issue is May 15, 2008.
Art Documentation contributor guidelines may be found at: http://www.arlisna.org/artdoc/contrib_guidelines.html
We look forward to hearing from you!

Case on Orphaned Works May Be Heard by the Supreme Court
Posted: September 13, 2007 Filed under: News Comments OffIn Kahle, the issue is Congress’ change from a self-selecting system of copyright, where people had to register and give notice to indicate that they wanted copyright protection, to an indiscriminate system where every napkin doodle is copyrighted and people are forced to license or dedicate their works to the public domain, or make some other indication that they do not want copyright protection. This change from an opt-in to an opt-out system has produced generations of “orphan works” — creative works that are still under copyright, but for which owners are absent or prohibitively expensive to find. People who want to make use of an orphan work cannot locate the copyright owner to obtain permission. These would-be creators’ fear that someone will appear years later alleging copyright infringement chills new creative uses.
The 10th Circuit’s decision in Golan should make it more likely that the Supreme Court will grant a review and hear the Kahle case, because there is now a split between two federal circuit courts regarding the First Amendment’s application to Congress’ copyright lawmaking.

Curious Expeditions’ Compendium of Beautiful Libraries
Posted: September 11, 2007 Filed under: Fun, Images, Museums, Photography, [ Creating the ARLIS/NA Student Blog ], [ Suggestions for Improving this Blog ] Comments OffEveryone has some kind of place that makes them feel transported to a magical realm. For some people it’s castles with their noble history and crumbling towers. For others it’s abandoned factories, ivy choked, a sense of foreboding around every corner. For us here at Curious Expeditions, there has always been something about libraries. Row after row, shelf after shelf, there is nothing more magical than a beautiful old library.

Questioning Authority Conference March 2008
Posted: September 11, 2007 Filed under: Opportunities: Calls for Papers, Opportunities: Conferences Comments OffThe Student Chapter of the Special Libraries Association at the
University of Michigan’s School of Information working with our faculty
advisor and the Dean’s Office would like to tell you, your faculty, and
your students of an exciting upcoming event. During the last weekend of
March 2008 we will be hosting a national conference in Ann Arbor with
the theme “Questioning Authority”.
This masters student centered conference will address the topic from a
multidisciplinary approach. The question of the authority of an
information resource has always been a central issue in the field of
information. The Internet , Web 2.0 technologies, and the growing body
of information in digital formats have led to further concerns of
authority. This conference will address these concerns, which range
over such topics as the validity of user created information systems
found in social networking applications, such as Flickr and Wikipedia,
to how all Web users, or the very Web itself, may become savvy
information credentialers.
We seek masters and doctoral student papers and posters to join our
keynote speakers, workshops, panels, tours, and networking events.
Please encourage your students to become involved by submitting work
and attending the conference. We will call for student scholarly
submissions in October with a December submission deadline.
Registration for the conference will begin in November.
Please relay this information to the student SLA group representatives
and advisors at your school, as well as to any others you think may be
interested. Though we are initially sending this information via SLA
representatives, students in all information related studies are
encouraged to participate. Detailed program information will be
available on our website in the near future at:
http://www.questioningauthority.org/ Feel free to contact us with
further questions at questioningauthority2008@gmail.com or
sla.officers@umich.edu
We look forward to working with you, your school, and your students as
we address one of the most pervasive issues in information sciences in
an engaging and collaborative manner!
