Visual Resources Curator and Instructor in Art Appreciation – University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point

Position Description:
Image Collection Curator and Instructor in Art Appreciation. Responsibilities include overseeing and expanding the Art Department’s collection of slides, digital images and other teaching image resources, and teaching two sections of 100-level Art Appreciation for non-Art Majors.  The successful candidate must organize the activities of student employees (give work assignments, maintain consistent filing standards, schedule working hours for payroll, etc.), handling all aspects of both conventional slides and digital imagery (filing slides, obtaining and cataloguing new images–primarily digital–establishing and organizing a viable digital image database, organizing access and distribution of digital images, etc.). The successful candidate will also teach two sections (one preparation) of 100-level Art Appreciation (world art history) for non-Art Majors. Must also participate effectively in Art Department governance, faculty meetings, etc.

Department/University Description:
Stevens Point is a small city of 25,000, in a greater metropolitan area of ca. 40,000, in a scenic rural setting in central Wisconsin, half an hour south of Wausau and an hour and a half north of Madison. In addition to the University, agriculture, paper and insurance are the major industries in the area. Cultural diversity is limited, but enriched recently by the arrival of numerous Hmong and other south and southeast Asian immigrants and active recruitment of international students and faculty by the University. The University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point is a fully accredited 4-year liberal arts campus in the University of Wisconsin system. The Department of Art and Design is a NASAD accredited studio art program offering B.A. and B.F.A. degrees in 2-D, 3-D or Graphic Design, as well as a minor in Art History. The department shares the magnificent new Noel Fine Arts Center with three other departments in the College of Fine Arts and Communication: Music, Theatre & Dance and the Suzuki Center. The art department also has close links with UWSP’s nationally praised Office of International Programs.

Qualifications:
Masters in an appropriate field, either MA / M. Phil. in Art History with appropriate additional computer and organizational or curatorial skills, or MLS with appropriate knowledge of Art History. Ability to work congenially with faculty and students. Ability to organize activities of student workers. Ability to teach at the introductory college level. Ability to use all computer equipment and applications needed for overseeing a digital image collection (e-mail, database, some digital image processing and word-processing are required). Finalists will be subject to background checks.

PART-TIME LIBRARY ASSISTANT

Dumbarton Oaks Research Library

Part-time position supporting a variety of library functions.  Applicants must be able to work at least 15 hours per week, with hours scheduled over three different weekdays.  Library hours are 9:00 – 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday.  Exact schedule is negotiated between the successful applicant and the library director.

Responsibilities:
1.      Shelve books and shift collections.
2.      Retrieve materials from the stacks and prepare for Interlibrary Loan shipment.
3.      Computer searching in bibliographic databases to assist in collection development.
4.      Assist researchers with use of complex equipment (e.g., Minolta PS 7000 and PS5000c scanners and burning CDs for files captured).
5.      Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Experience in use of a library, with an understanding of the need for care and accuracy in handling library materials.  General computer skills.

Preferred: Library work experience.  Art history or humanities background.  Foreign language ability (specify languages in resumé).

Pay rate is $9.00 per hour.

Call for Papers: Virtual Worlds: Libraries, Education, and Museums

Saturday, March 8, 2008 in Second Life

Purpose of the Conference:
To provide a gathering place for librarians, information professionals, educators, museologists, and others to learn about and discuss the educational, informational, and cultural opportunities of virtual worlds.

Please note: Although the conference will be held in the virtual world Second Life, presentation and paper proposals about LEM developments in other virtual worlds are encouraged.

Possible Topics for Presentations, Papers, and Participatory Events:

· Virtual world events and exhibits as the drivers of attendance and engagement
· Immersive learning environments
· Reference service possibilities and practicalities in virtual worlds
· Corporate and special librarianship in virtual worlds
· Educational tools and resources
· Enterprise uses of virtual worlds
· Tours of LEM locations in Second Life
· Gaming and virtual worlds
· VW LEM opportunities for children, tweens, and teens
· Dreams and visions for LEM activities in virtual worlds
· Assessing LEM initiatives in virtual worlds

Proposal Guidelines and Deadlines:

· Each session will be 45 minutes long.
· All sessions will begin on the hour.
· All proposals are due by 5:00 p.m. SLT on Monday, February 11, 2008.

· For presentations, please send a paragraph about your proposed presentation, the intended audience, and any pertinent URLs or SLURLs.
· For papers, please send an abstract of your paper.

· The 25 USD registration fee will be waived for all presenters.
· Proposals from students and general citizens are welcome. You do not need to be a member of the LEM professions to present at this conference.

Fine Arts Librarian – Southern Illinois University Carbondale

Library Affairs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is seeking a Fine Arts Librarian. This is a full-time, 12-month, continuing (tenure track) appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor available May 1, 2008, or later.

 

Required Qualifications:  ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library Science. (Candidates are expected to have completed all requirements for this degree before the date of appointment.  If all requirements have not been completed, a one-year term appointment at the rank of Instructor at a lower salary will be offered.) Familiarity with reference sources in an academic library. Demonstrated skills in instruction and development of effective teaching materials. Knowledge of or coursework in one of the Fine or Performing Arts. Working knowledge of a wide variety of information technology applications and proficiency in the use of general and subject-specific print and electronic reference resources. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to organize work and meet deadlines. Interest and potential to meet established Library Affairs criteria for promotion and tenure, including professional service and published research.

 

Preferred Qualifications:  A degree (bachelor’s or above) in one of the Fine or Performing Arts. Experience in providing reference service (including web-based services), library instruction, and library web development in an academic library. Fluency in Spanish.
