POSITION TITLE: Visual Resources Librarian

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Head of Digital
Collections, the Visual Resources Librarian has primary oversight and
responsibility for development of the image collection supporting
teaching faculty, in particular Northwestern’s Art History faculty
and ultimately faculty in a variety of other schools and disciplines.
RESPONSIBILITIES: In conjunction with library subject specialists,
the Digital Collections department’s Outreach and Training
Specialist, and the coordinator of digital production, the Visual
Resources Librarian is a liaison to faculty, designing intake
processes to identify new and existing images needed for teaching,
and supporting use of digital images in the classroom. Sets
priorities for cataloguing and scanning of images. Assists with
management and coordination of access via the Voyager and MDID
database systems. Supervises and assists with cataloging and
classification of images. Directs maintenance of the physical slide
collection and coordinates development of an overall schedule to
proactively digitize or digitally re-acquire slides. Actively
searches out and recommends purchase of new image sets and related
image database subscriptions. Assists faculty, staff and students in
the use of the collection, providing reference and research
assistance. Participates in planning future digital and
technology-related initiatives. Supervises the Visual Media
Collection coordinator and the Visual Resources metadata assistant.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school
or the equivalent combination of education and relevant library
experience. Supervisory experience. At least two years experience in
a library, museum, or visual resources collection, specializing in
information services, collection development, or technical services.
Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Good
technical skills and flexibility to work in a dynamic and changing
environment. Preferred: B.A., M.F.A or M.A. in Art or Art History.
Knowledge of art history image collection cataloging methods and
experience working with digital image databases.
ENVIRONMENT: Northwestern University, Evanston , Illinois , is a
major private university with an extensive library system. This
includes the Northwestern University Library, three branch libraries
on the Evanston Campus, and three libraries on the Chicago Campus.

Research Libraries (ARL) and participates in programs of the
Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC). The holdings of the

Maybe there will be a cult following like lomography.

Sustainability in the Art Library

It would be interesting to see university dorms, libraries, etc. use energy usage displays. This one is a prototype that received honorable mention for Core77′s Greener Gadget Contest. It has a really beautiful design – imho. There are others out on the market now. Here’s a list.
