Project Assistant – The Jewish Museum

Under the supervision of the Collections Manager, the Project Assistant will be working on a Grant-funded position up to two year, full time project involving cataloging and data entry for a selection of 3,000 collection objects to be posted on the Museum’s website. The Project Assistant is responsible for re-cataloging a group of approximately 3,000 permanent collection objects. This consists of verification of documented information relating to objects in the collection as well as, in some cases, new research. Also important are the organization and maintenance of project related documentation. The cataloguer will also be inputting data for these catalogued objects in TMS. The position requires resolute concentration and research skills, attention to detail, and accuracy in data entry and proof-reading.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Catalogue selection of approximately 3,000 objects in the permanent collection.
  • Research museum records and bibliographic sources to establish accurate acquisitions information (donor/acquisitions source, vendor, funding source, credit line), artist/maker, artist/maker’s biography, object date, object titles, alternate titles, ex-collections/provenance, published references, exhibition history, and related works etc.
  • Correspond with artists/makers, donors, dealers, vendors, auction houses, and galleries to ascertain or verify information about the object when necessary.
  • Enter or update object documentation in TMS.
  • Work closely with curators, Collections Manager, and the Museum’s Assistant Cataloguer on all aspects of project and related work flow.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • When necessary, research provenance of collection objects and enter information in TMS.
  • Generate periodic progress reports.
  • Attend monthly project meetings.
  • Respond to internal and external requests for object documentation including inquiries from scholars.
  • Assist with next phase of project as needed.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.A. in Art History or Museum Studies. M.A. preferred
  • Strong research skills and attention to detail
  • Familiarity with image processing strongly preferred
  • Strong computer skills including good knowledge of TMS
  • Knowledge of foreign language(s) helpful

Visual Resources Manager – The Barnes Foundation

The Barnes Foundation is seeking an individual to oversee a high-resolution digital imaging project.

The Visual Resources Manager will be responsible for the management, distribution, and preservation of digital images and photographic materials related to the art collections of the Barnes Foundation. The Visual Resources Manager will initially manage a high-resolution digitization project of the Barnes Foundation’s art collection which will require the coordination of a team of photographers and art handlers. The Visual Resources Manager will oversee ongoing image production of the art collection and will be responsible for the development and implementation of cataloguing and metadata standards for the Foundation’s digital image collections.

Requirements for the position include a graduate degree with a specialization in digital imaging technology or visual resources management, or related field, or equivalent work experience managing both digital and physical media in a museum or cultural institution. Course work in art history, photography, or fine arts is desirable. Applicants should have knowledge of, and experience with, current practices in digital imaging and scanning technologies, equipment, and preservation including proficiency with Adobe Photoshop, color management tools for digital assets, digital image management software, and collections management software. Excellent communication and organizational skills will be required as well as experience in the coordination and supervision of staff. Experience working with publications and knowledge of image editing and digital prepress is desirable.
