Alliance for Young Artists and Writers Intern – New York

Posted by Carter on June 21, 2008

Duration: 4 months

Reports to:  Associate Executive Director, Alliance for Young Artists and Writers

Project: Research the history of and create archiving system for The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Background: The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards were founded in 1923 to recognize and reward exceptionally talented teenagers. The Awards have identified many young Americans who have gone on to become celebrated artists and writers, including Richard Avedon, Joyce Maynard, Sylvia Plath, Philip Pearlstein, Truman Capote, Joyce Carol Oates and Andy Warhol. The bulk of the Awards’ archives are housed at Scholastic Inc., but the archives are not complete and there isn’t a clear, systematic process to record and preserve archival materials and collect current materials. Currently, the nonprofit Alliance receives over 100,000 submissions of art and writing by creative teenagers across the country, submitted to The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Intern would be expected to:
•    Review and catalog the materials on hand and design a system for organizing archives and a logic for collecting and cataloging future art and writing submissions.
•    Create a comprehensive, searchable list of award winners with keyword descriptions of their works.
•    Include the following information in database design: winning students first/last names; year of award; student email, school, city, state; parent phone number; art/writing category; name of work; whether student won a portfolio award; and link to the work.
•    Document what the Alliance currently has on file and identify missing pieces.
•    Research history of: different awards categories; jurors; regional programs.
•    Research: exhibition venues; publications; scholarships; sponsors; board of directors, honorees; Press and other promotion – radio shows, tv interviews, etc.
•    Design a system that can be provided to regional programs (some 45-years old) for their own local archive projects.
•    Make recommendations for posting the archives online as a resource for scholars artists, teachers and students.

Ideal candidates are Graduate Students in Library Science or Art History

University of Iowa Museum of Art Implements Disaster Plan

Posted by Carter on June 13, 2008

The UI Museum of Art has a disaster plan which was implemented last week. On a proactive basis the fine arts insurance company, Lloyds of London, has provided an emergency response team with fine art expertise. Three out-of-state conservators have been on-site preparing objects to be transported off campus as needed. Professional fine art packers and shippers are assisting museum and university staff. We have security staff on-site 24 hours a day. There has been no significant intrusion of water to the facilities.

Arts campus libraries, including music and art have been closed as if they shouldn’t expect to get back into the buildings until August.

Some flooding photos from yesterday can be seen here:

The School of Art and Art history is the building in the photo, the library is on the second level.

Call for Volunteer(s) – Project Leader for Student Outreach Initiatives

Posted by tbergstrom on June 10, 2008

It was great to meet so many of you at the ArLiSNAP meeting during the ARLIS annual conference in Denver.  One of the topics floated at the meeting was ways in which to get more bodies involved in ArLiSNAP via additional volunteer positions. The general consensus was that more people might be willing to be involved if there were a greater range of volunteer positions, both in scale and duties.

To this end, we’d like to announce the first of these volunteer opportunities- a
Project Leader for Student Outreach Initiatives

What we are hoping for with this position is someone interested in taking on the task of researching possibilities for ArLiSNAP to engage more with students. To get us started along this path, we first need to have some idea about where needs exist that ArLiSNAP could fill.  This would involve the project leader looking into topics such as what ARLIS’s commitments and current activities are in regard to students, how individual chapters connect with local student populations, etc. The Project Leader for Student Outreach Initiatives could then compile and disseminate this info either through blog posts or a written summary, in the spirit of eliciting discussion as to how ArLISNAP could expand in this direction.

Anyone with even mild curiosity or interest about this position is welcome to leave a comment.  If you think you might be interested in this position but would like to work on it with others, we’d be into that too. Or if you think another topic would benefit from similar inquiry, feel free to suggest it.
