Archivist (temporary position), Pritzker Architecture Prize

The Pritzker Architecture Prize, the renowned international award granted yearly to a living architect in recognition of a body of built work, is seeking an archivist to organize the institutional archives of the prize and help establish the long-term policies for the collection and its care. The 40-hour/week position is estimated to last 10 months and will be based in Chicago, Illinois.

The archivist will survey the holdings (which include approximately 100 boxes of paper documents, photos, slides, videos, some digital materials, books, articles, etc.), arrange and describe the collection, making sure that it is housed according to proper archival standards, and create a finding aid following established archival standards which will allow the easy access (electronically) and retrieval of materials.

Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in art history, architectural history, American studies, or similar
  • Master’s degree in library science, museum studies, architectural history or related field
  • Two to three years professional experience as an archivist, collections manager, or related position in a library, museum or private/corporate archive
  • Solid knowledge of established archival standards and best practices for the types of contents and media found in the collection
  • Proficiency with collections management databases, knowledge of preservation and metadata standards for digital collections, and proficiency with basic office software
  • Ability to lift heavy boxes
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently
  • Excellent organizational skills and a demonstration of initiative to complete projects

The Art Libraries Society of North America is now accepting applications for its annual Internship Award.

The ARLIS/NA Internship Award provides financial support for students preparing for a career in art librarianship or visual resources curatorship. The award grants $2,500.00 to the selected recipient to support a period of internship in an art library or visual resources collection.

The deadline for applications is October 15, 2008.

HousingPrototypes.org contains examples of housing designed by different architects in different historic periods, countries, and cities. Projects range in scale from single buildings to examples of large social housing projects containing thousands of dwellings. A typological guide provides for research by housing site and building organization. Each example is presented as an individual case study complete with building data and description, a critical analysis, bibliographic resources, photographic images, and drawings. The data is cross-indexed for easy searching by housing type, country, city, architect and date. Links in the text provide for further browsing. New examples are constantly being added to this collection. The site is designed for convenient browsing and all examples are downloadable using most web browsers.

Description:

The Education and Public Programs Manager must have a passion for contemporary art and the ability to spark interest, arouse curiosity, and encourage others to learn about art utilizing visual literacy and object oriented learning.

Duties:

Create, plan, and facilitate all AAM exhibition-related educational and public programs in association with the Director/Chief Curator and Assistant Curator. Current programs include an Architecture Lecture Series, Create-Your-Own Lift ticket, 4th of July picnic, Exhibition-in-a-Box, Art Talks, Arts in the Schools, and Family Days at the Museum.

Develop all educational materials for AAM exhibitions, including artCart and artMAP materials and any other non-curatorial tour materials such as the AAM cell phone audio tour and Teacher’s Guide.

Create custom audio cell phone guides for each exhibition. Encourage and assist artists to record a personal message about their work. Devise innovative ways to encourage use of this educational resource.

Create and send AAM email blasts to over 1,100 contacts, via Constant Contact, advertising all AAM events.

Prepare all education text for publications and education grant proposals.

Create content for and administrate the Young Curators of the Roaring Fork program and exhibition.

Build and maintain relationships with regional educational community; promote exhibitions as educational resources and schedule and lead all school tours.

Create mission-related content for AAM workshops; manage AAM teachers and oversee workshops, while assisting teachers as needed.

Coordinate collaborations with area organizations such as the Aspen Writers’ Foundation, Colorado Mountain College, the Aspen Institute, Jazz Aspen, ACES, and spread the word about AAM programs.

Coordinate all AAM educational outreach programs: jail, seniors, hospital, and community centers.

Expand AAM reputation of excellence through innovative and original educational programs.

Qualifications:

Must have a MA in Art History or Museum Education with experience as a supervisor of education and education-related components in an art museum, developing education programs and materials, and outreach activities. Candidate must possess strong writing, teaching, and organizational skills.

METADATA LIBRARIAN

Reporting to the Head of Cataloging & Metadata Services, the Metadata Librarian provides leadership and guidance in the planning, development, creation, and implementation of metadata standards for the Libraries, and actively participates as a resource and liaison to the University community in regards to metadata practices.

Position #001537.

Master’s Degree from an ALA accredited program or foreign equivalent, or Ph.D. with required library experience. Working knowledge and experience with two or more metadata schema and protocols such as Dublin Core, EAD, VRA Core, MODS, METS, etc.; knowledge of cataloging rules, standards, and controlled vocabularies; awareness of current issues and trends in metadata and digital library development; demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately in a service and production-oriented environment and adapt to a fast paced rapidly changing environment; ability to plan and implement routines and processes that ensure optimum production, and monitor projects through to completion in a cost-effective manner; demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with diverse constituencies; effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Highly desirable: Experience with applying metadata standards to describe digital collections using CONTENTdm or other digital management system(s); familiarity with related XML technology such as XSLT or XLINK; familiarity with relational database structure; experience with archives and archival practice; one year of experience in a medium to large research library or similar organization; cataloging experience in an academic library; reading knowledge of Spanish.
