Metadata/Catalog Librarian
Roux Library at Florida Southern College seeks a Metadata/Catalog Librarian who will have primary responsibility, under the direction of the Library Director,for execution of a project to create an online digital archive containing approximately 4,000 images of Frank Lloyd Wright materials in the College Archives. This position as a visiting librarian is a temporary grant-funded appointment ending May 31, 2010. The successful candidate will be skilled in processing, cataloging, and outreach for the archives. Applications received by December 15, 2008 will be given preference. The target start date is February 1, 2009.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate workflow for digitizing, processing, and cataloging Frank Lloyd Wright materials for the digital collection
- Catalog and assign metadata to digital materials
- Research appropriate copyright, licensing, and rights management issues related to the collection
- Collaborate with other librarians to create and implement best practices to the creation and maintenance of the digitization project
- Participate in and/or supervise scanning activities including quality assurance for processed images
- Develop finding aids for materials in the collection and other outreach programs
- Maintain schedules and deadlines mandated by the grant
- Participate in creating reports detailing the progress of the project
- Co-supervise student assistants
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required
Qualified candidates will have an ALA accredited master’s degree in Library and Information Science, or a M.A. degree with an emphasis in archives management, and knowledge of cataloging and metadata creation.
Preferred
Candidates should also have experience using bibliographic utilities including OCLC, integrated library systems, and content management systems such as CONTENTdm; knowledge of various cataloging and metadata standards such as MARC21, XML, EAD, Dublin Core, LCSH, DACS, and AACR2 as well as authority control; and experience with digital scanning hardware and software including OCR software and Photoshop. The ability to handle project planning and management particularly in a college archive setting and supervisory experience is also beneficial.
Salary
The salary for this position was established during the grant application process at the rate of $30,000 per 12 months, plus a comprehensive benefits package.

General Description/Position Summary

This position is within the Department of Art & Art History. The Visual Resources Collection is in the process of converting to digital format. The slide collection was formed to support teaching in the Art & Art History department; the digital collection will likewise support the same department as well as the broader College community. The Visual Resources Curator reports to the department Chair, and will interface with the department of Academic Technology in developing a college-wide visual database system. The Art & Art History department is comprised of 10 faculty (full-time and part-time).
Responsibilities/Expectations
-Maintain slides and equipment as needed during transition to digital collection
-scan and catalogue meta-data for expanding digital image collection
-acquire high-quality digital images and convert existing analog images
-assist in management and development of existing databases and appropriate presentation tools
-help train faculty and troubleshoot problems using digital technology in the classroom
-update and maintain digital database for still and moving images relevant to faculty teaching and research
-work with department of Academic Technology to plan, create, and implement a college-wide database (on independent server) which will serve as portal to multiple image services
-oversee, maintain condition, and periodic upgrade of digital projectors, computer equipment, and scanners
-hire, train and supervise student workers (2-3)
-assist users of the collections in locating and using resources
-participate in relevant professional organizations
-keep current in relevant fields of digital imaging and cataloguing
Qualifications
MA in art history (BA considered with other Masters degree). Three years minimum work experience in similar position. Facility with analog and digital technologies, including advanced skills with standard computer software (Mac platform); FileMaker, Embark, Photoshop. Thorough knowledge of digital images, commercial databases, and technical standards and vocabulary; MDID, Image Viewer, Content dm, Artstor and Artstor OIV, PowerPoint, and other software as needed. Familiarity with one or more metatdata standards such as VRA or Dublin Core. Familiarity with time-based media and relevant software, such as iDVD, DVD Studio Pro, and Final Cut Pro desired. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work cooperatively and take initiatives in developing the collection and access.
Salary
$35,000-40,000 (paid over 12 months), plus benefits.

Description: NSCAD University is seeking an outstanding candidate to be responsible for the management of the Visual Resource Collection (VRC). The current collection consists of an extensive slide library, film, video and audio materials. A major initiative is the transition from an analog to a digital collection.

Designs services including access to and information about materials and the collection, research support for students and faculty, maintains industry connections and procure materials internationally.

* Bachelor’s degree (graduate degree preferred) in design-related discipline or materials-based design field.
* Substantial experience managing materials collection in academic setting or professional design office.
IMAGE RESOURCES CURATOR – The Image Resources Curator manages the day-to-day operations of the Image Resource Library and Archives and delivers user services. Collaborates with faculty and IRL staff to continue the development of a proactive service to support curriculum, research, and administrative activities. Responsible for ongoing collection development in coordination with the Head of Image IRL and performs cataloging and database management. Provides workshops and individual support for faculty use of image resources for teaching, learning and scholarship.
Qualifications
* Master’s degree in Art History or related field or Master’s degree in Library/Information Science with additional degree or substantial knowledge of Art History field.

The wiki is intended to complement the conference website and blog by providing a more generalized guide to the happenings of the Annual conference. Whereas the website and blog contain information particular to each individual conference and locale, the wiki is intended to provide valuable tips on what to expect… and to fill in information that first time attendees might not know.
With that in mind, what are some topics/categories that you think a wiki of this kind should cover? Here are some thoughts to get things rolling:

The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens is seeking a well-organized and detailed-oriented Library Assistant to provide support to our Technical Services department.
Working under regular supervision and reporting to the Principal Rare Book Cataloger, performs adaptive cataloging of select rare library materials and related accessioning tasks and creates online finding aids. Creates and maintains metadata for digital objects as needed. Performs catalog support functions such as searching and inputting, as well as various clerical tasks.
Essential Functions:
Performs adaptive cataloging of select rare materials, based on appropriate available copy. Creates online finding aids for select book collections permanently or temporarily cataloged at the collection level. Creates and maintains metadata for select digital obkects as needed. Searches print and online sources to determine if the library already owns duplicates of titles to be ordered or cataloged or to verify bibliographic data. Creates or downloads temporary bibliographic records in the integrated library system, attaching iten and order records according to unit and department procedure. Has regular contact with selectors to resolve problems relating to accessioning. Performs catalog support functions such as searching print and online sources and inputting, correcting, and producing bibliographic records in an online database.
Other Functions:
May perform clerical tasks in support of cataloging as well as filing, photocopying, and other departmental activities. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Familiarity with institutional cataloging conventions for rare materials. This skill may be obtained through on-the-job training. Accurate, detail-oriented clerical skills which may be obtained through completion of an Associate of Arts or higher degree. Computer abilities, including data entry and word processing as well as database management software skills. Ability to maintain a monthly quota for temporary and fully-cataloged records as determined by the Principal Rare Book Cataloger. Must be tactful and courteous; and efficient in managing his or her time.
Experience:
One year clerical experience required. Library technical services experience preferred.

This person will help with materials selection, may provide reference service back-up and library instruction.
There is an opportunity for an additional 90 grant-funded hours to work on a digitization project doing cataloging and metadata creation.

Responsibilities:
The Archivist works within a collaborative and team environment. The incumbent will be an enthusiastic and innovative individual who demonstrates leadership in the creation, development, maintenance and support of digital archival holdings. He/she will work closely with the Digital Initiatives Librarian to develop and implement policies and procedures for the capture, storage and long-term accessibility of these holdings. Working with the Web Librarian, the successful candidate will provide leadership in the development, management and maintenance of the departmental web presence. He/she will show leadership in the development and implementation of a communications/outreach plan for the Clara Thomas Archives and Special Collections. Assists the Head with securing grants and other funding to support digital projects. He/she will be regularly involved in the provision of reference and research services as well as in the appraisal, acquisition, arrangement, RAD-based description, and physical processing of private papers and university records. Will participate in instruction of undergraduate and graduate students in the use of archival holdings. The incumbent will be committed to scholarship, professional development and service.
Qualifications:
- Master’s in archival studies from a graduate programme conforming to the Association of Canadian Archivists’ Guidelines for the Development of a Two-Year Curriculum for a Master’s of Archival Studies, or MLS (or equivalent) with concentration in professional archival education
- Up to three years of professional archival experience in an established archive, preferably in an academic setting
- Demonstrated experience in using computer applications for the management of archival holdings and the creation of digital documents for outreach via virtual exhibits, blogs etc.
- Awareness of funding opportunities and of the grant-writing process
- Demonstrated experience in the creation of promotional materials for cultural programming (preferably archives)
- Demonstrated knowledge of media conversion technologies
- Demonstrated knowledge of the creation and management of electronic records
- Demonstrated project management skills
- Excellent oral and written communication and instruction skills
- Excellent organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills

The University of Vermont Libraries seeks a service-oriented, innovative, and energetic librarian for the position of Digital Initiatives Outreach Librarian. The Institute for Museum and Library Services has recently awarded the University of Vermont a 24-month grant to continue development of the Libraries’ digital initiatives.
The Digital Initiatives Outreach Librarian will implement outreach, educational, and assessment efforts for the University of Vermont Libraries’ Center for Digital Initiatives (CDI, http://cdi.uvm.edu). In collaboration with CDI and Special Collections staff, the Digital Initiatives Outreach Librarian will adopt a user-centered approach to working with constituents, including UVM faculty, students and staff; researchers; and the general public.
The Outreach DIL will assess and increase the CDI’s user base, collaborate with appropriate faculty to integrate digital collections into UVM’s curriculum, and encourage campus and community participation in the development of digitization projects. He or she will also advance the grant project’s goal of developing collaborative relationships with other institutions.
The University of Vermont (UVM) is home to more than 12,000 undergraduate, graduate, and medical school students and more than 1,250 full- and part-time faculty. UVM is located in the thriving urban center of Burlington in the beautiful Champlain Valley, an area distinguished by spectacular scenery, year-round outdoor recreational opportunities, vibrant music and arts scene, and overall high quality of life. Burlington International Airport offers frequent jet access to major Atlantic and Midwest hubs, and the city of Montreal, Canada, is an easy drive 100 miles/160 km to the northwest.
With a collection size of 1.5 million volumes and an annual acquisitions budget of $5.6 million, the University Libraries consists of Bailey/Howe Library, Dana Medical Library, Cook Chemistry/Physics Library, and two remote storage facilities. The Libraries established the Center for Digital Initiatives, a gateway to digital resources at UVM, with funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). A grant from IMLS in 2005-2007 enabled the Libraries to purchase hardware and software, hire a digital librarian, and build the Center’s first digital collections.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Conducts an evaluation of CDI users/usage at the beginning of the grant period, and an overall project evaluation at the conclusion, using tools developed in collaboration with CDI staff;
* Establishes and implements an education outreach plan, engaging the UVM community and local K-12 educators in the use and creation of CDI resources.
* Actively communicates with library liaisons to academic departments about the CDI and its possible applications in the disciplines they cover;
* Publicizes the CDI’s collection development process and plays an active role in encouraging and developing proposals for content creation;
* Responds to digital project proposals submitted by community members, guiding them through the project evaluation and selection process;
* Provides leadership for CDI communications by developing publicity materials, in collaboration with the Assistant to the Dean for External Relations, to inform target audiences and the public at large about CDI news, resources, and project opportunities;
* Organizes a small conference of Vermont cultural heritage stakeholders to explore possibilities for collaborative projects and strategies for establishing statewide standards, resource-sharing, and evaluation;
* With Special Collections’ Manuscript Curator and the Digital Initiatives Librarian, assumes shared responsibility for CDI project management.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
