Longwood Gardens seeks a Visual Resource Specialist to take the lead in digitizing, cataloguing, and providing access to a variety of visual resources. The Visual Resource Specialist will develop and maintain content and usage guidelines for the DAM system, ensure cataloguing consistency, oversee and operate within the digitization working group, and continually evaluate usability. The VRS will also coordinate content development priorities, conduct training sessions, and provide research and technical assistance to patrons. The successful candidate will possess a strong desire to facilitate access to cultural resources using new media technologies and established metadata schemas and standards.

Qualifications: MLIS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution with coursework in cataloguing, indexing and abstracting, and/or archival description, or relevant subject Master’s degree, or Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, production, or new media technologies; and have experience in organizing and providing access to visual resources using a relational database or DAM system.

Salary and Duration: Part-time, permanent, 32 hours/week, salary commensurate with education and experience.

The Special Collections Department of Texas State’s Alkek Library seeks an Assistant Curator for Acquisitions.
This position reports to the Curator and is responsible for identifying and acquiring significant archives of Southwestern writing and significant works of Southwestern and Mexican photography on behalf of the Wittliff Collections.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
= Identify significant archives of Southwestern writing and significant works of Southwestern and Mexican photography on behalf of the Southwestern Writers Collection and the Southwestern & Mexican Photography Collection;
= Maintain an acquisitions database and a database of all artists who should be considered for acquisitions;
= Acquire the significant archives in consultation with the curator, founding donor, and other assistant curators;
= Write text for correspondence, proposals, newsletters, press releases, exhibits, handouts, public programs, and other written needs;
= Help develop written policies and procedures for the Collection;
= With curator, manage all aspects of the acquisitions process;
= Engage in professional activities in accordance with Texas State University’s standards for promotion for professional librarians and curators.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
= ALA-accredited MLS or related master’s degree;
= Strong oral and interpersonal skills to establish rapport with a variety of people including founding donor, head curator, writers, photographers, collectors, galleries, dealers, appraisers, and other relevant parties;
= Knowledge of Southwestern literature and Southwestern and Mexican photography;
= Skill in Composing and editing complex, professional-level prose;
= Ability to read and interpret books, articles, technical manuals, and written inquires;
= Problem solving and decision-making skills to identify and acquire appropriate archives for the collections;
= Proficiency in basic math and accounting procedures;
= Ability to effectively use computer hardware and software.

Preferred:
= Knowledge of Spanish;
= Understanding of rare and fragile materials;
= Knowledge of Collection Development practices.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: $39,960 – $63,707 annually depending on assigned rank based on qualifications and experience. Advancement in rank is available through the Librarian/Curator Career Ladder. Benefits include monthly contribution to health insurance/benefits package and retirement program. No state or local income tax.

The Southwestern Writers Collection preserves and exhibits the personal papers and memorabilia of the region’s leading writers, filmmakers, and musicians. The Wittliff Collection of Southwestern & Mexican Photography is a photo archive and creative center devoted to the visual culture of Mexico and the southwestern United States, showcasing the works of distinguished photographers whose images will delight and inspire those exploring the visual heritage of the region. Both collections are part of the Special Collections Department of the Alkek Library and are now known as the Wittliff Collections.
