The Emory University Libraries invites applications for a new Metadata Librarian position to serve on a newly created Metadata Services Team. Metadata Services forms part of Technical Services within the Content Division, which also includes Preservation, Digitization Services, and Storage. The Content Division, and specifically Metadata Services, complements key initiatives for developing digital content in special collections, Digital Programs/Institute for Digital Scholarship, and Repository Services. The libraries are currently in the developmental stages of building a repository infrastructure to manage digital content and metadata, and are continually developing services and technologies that share and allow use of digital content through a system such as ExLibris’ Primo.

Key Responsibilities: The Metadata Librarian will:
= Provide expertise, leadership and management in the creation and maintenance of metadata for the description, discovery and preservation of digital content acquired or created by the libraries
= Work collaboratively with staff throughout the libraries on services and projects that depend upon metadata for success
= Analyze metadata needs and recommend or choose schema and technologies to capture, import, record, and share metadata;
= Provide training and technical assistance to other staff, including design of templates for metadata input;
= Collaboratively develop and maintain policies, guidelines, and standards for digitization and metadata;
= Collect, analyze and share statistics; write documentation and reports;
= Participate in research and development efforts; and
= Represent the library in national, regional and campus organizations and initiatives.

Qualifications:
= ALA-accredited master’s degree in library/information science;
= Demonstrated experience in creating metadata for text, still images, sound recordings, moving images, and/or complex (hybrid) objects;
= Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging issues and trends in digital libraries and repositories and their impact on metadata standards;
= Working knowledge of non-MARC metadata schemas such as MODS, METS, EAD, TEI, Dublin Core, and VRA Core; of thesauri and ontologies, and of formats and tools such as XML, OAI, and at least one repository software package, e.g. dSpace, ContentDM, Fedora, etc., with familiarity with Luna Insight and/or iTunes University a plus;
= Knowledge of traditional cataloging standards: MARC, AACR2, LCSH and/or MeSH, and LC classification; familiarity with other controlled vocabularies, such as AAT, and social tagging trends;
= Experience in crosswalking, normalizing and transforming xml metadata. Experience with use of XSLT and familiarity with database design and operations preferred;
= Demonstrated understanding of administrative, technical and preservation metadata; familiarity with the OAIS reference model.
= Project management skills; ability to lead and manage metadata initiatives associated with digital repositories, digital publications, and digital archives;
= Demonstrated interest in professional involvement and contribution.
