I love the Chicago Cultural Center -- it is the old main public library. The Tiffany Stained Glass Domes are beautiful, and it's always quiet, cool, free, and right across from Millennium Park.

If you read conference guides, as I did a lot of last year when we were working on our Conference Survival Wiki, one of the tips you see often is to give yourself time to escape the conference and venture out into the non-conference world. ALA can be really overwhelming, so allow yourself a break when you need it. There will still be tons of people to meet, sessions to attend, and vendors to browse when you get back.

That said, one of my favorite things to do in Chicago is to pack a picnic and head to the Frank Gehry-designed Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. The concerts are free; a schedule of upcoming performances can be found here.
