Leads the library’s efforts to produce, gather, organize, and disseminate digital content (a) useful to the curriculum, (b) in need of preservation, or (c) unique to the College and of use to the larger scholarly community.

Principal duties and responsibilities

● Provides vision and leadership for the creation and delivery of the Library’s digital content.
● Plans for the design, integration, and maintenance of the Library’s digital asset management and preservation program and systems.
● Provides overall administration of the Library’s digital collections—including but not limited to locally-produced and managed online manifestations of College-owned/copyrighted records, documents, publications, and artifacts—and its Digitization Center, including budget development and staff hiring, training, and management.
● Works collaboratively with colleagues in the Library—especially the Head of Library Information Technology, staff in Archives and Special Collections, Technical Services, and the Collection Development Group—to collect, catalog and promote digital resources. (“Collect” here refers both to purchases from sources outside the College and to the digitization of materials already held by the Library.)
● Collaborates with IT personnel across campus and relevant subject specialists to select and/or develop back-end systems and user-interfaces that present collections to audiences on campus and around the world.
● Coordinates the digitization of materials for e-reserves and for use by students with special needs, in collaboration with the Head of Access Services.
● Formulates, documents, explains, and interprets policies, procedures, and work-flows for the Digitization Center.
● Encourages development of technology initiatives that respond to or anticipate user needs.
● Participates in and encourages collaboration within Amherst College, among the Five Colleges, and with other institutions to build partnerships and facilitate cooperative projects. Works especially closely with Archives & Special Collections and Technical Services to identify collections that merit attention, to design projects, and to monitor and evaluate work-flows.
● Keeps abreast of new trends, tools, opportunities, and campus needs in digital libraries and repositories and their impact on metadata standards. Contributes to a continuous process of assessment to ensure enrichment of the Library’s digital collections.
● Promotes use of the Library’s digital collections. Participates in user education to integrate digital resources into teaching, learning, and research across the curriculum and beyond the College.
● Participates in regional, national and international organizations dedicated to the development of standards and best practices for the creation, dissemination, and interoperability of digital resources.
● Actively practices and advocates effective communication throughout the Library and across the College.

Qualifications

● Master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or foreign equivalent.
● Minimum of three to five years’ academic library experience in digitization and digital assets management, including experience with systems such as DigiTool, CONTENTdm, Fedora, DSpace, or others.
● Experience supervising staff, including hiring, training, and conducting performance evaluations.
● Experience providing customer service and technical support for DAMS and other digital resources.
● Knowledge of art-history pedagogy, and the ways in which digital images can be marshaled to support the art-history and other curricula.
● Strong working knowledge of library systems and procedures, particularly metadata and cataloging standards and practices.
● Ability to work closely with colleagues from all Library departments and with students, faculty, staff and College administrators.
● Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
● Demonstrated analytical, organizational, planning, and project management skills. Experience managing personnel and equipment budgets.
● Demonstrable understanding of database systems and/or UNIX/Linux file structures and system management preferred.
● Experience collaborating with archives/special collections/institutional records preferred.
● Experience with repositories of scholarly digital materials a plus.

Library Assistant

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, the world’s first museum dedicated to the living heritage of rock and roll music, is currently seeking candidates for the position of Library Assistant.  Reporting to the Catalog and Metadata Librarian, the Library Assistant is responsible for processing incoming library materials, performing basic copy cataloging of library materials, assisting with acquisitions duties, and providing basic reference service to Library and Archives users.

A bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred.  The qualified candidate must possess two to three years library experience, preferably in an academic, research, or special library environment; experience processing monographs and serials in an integrated library system, preferably Millennium and experience performing copy cataloging of library materials in several formats.

Position Description:
The Librarian is responsible for the daily management, organization and patron service for the Museum’s library holdings. The Librarian will implement practices and policies to ensure the long-term care of these collections. As needed, this position will aid the Archivist with duties relating to archives and will help the Archivist with archive access requests. The position works in a team-oriented environment with Collections Staff including the Archivist, Research Curators, and other museum staff. The Librarian will provide services to the research, education, collections, and other museum departments, as well as research associates, visiting scholars, museum members and the general public.

Major Tasks and Responsibilities:
• Plans, organizes, and monitors day-to-day Library activities
• Provides direct and indirect patron assistance on a daily basis, including resource retrieval, telephone answering, emailed requests, and photocopying
• Supervises and sets goals for student workers and volunteers, and assists them as needed
• Supervises or performs all tasks related to reference, acquisition, and processing of 75,000 published volumes, separates, maps and other media
• Keeps statistics on patron usage and reshelving of library materials
• Catalogues Library holdings in a computerized database
• Reports to the Collections Manager on projects, activities, statistics, records, and challenges.
• Is responsible for the conservation and physical care of all materials in the library and actively monitors its security in conjunction with all staff, volunteers, and the Facilities Manager in a team-oriented environment.

Education and Experience Requirements:
• Formal library experience and/or masters degree from an ALA accredited Library/Information Science school preferred. Demonstrable knowledge of reference services and metadata standards (MARC, AACR2) desired along with a working knowledge of database management.

Abilities, Skills, and Knowledge:
• Extremely high attention to detail
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality in all professional matters.
• Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, with staff, trustees, vendors, and others to whom you represent the institution

Working Conditions:Generally work indoors, Monday through Friday, up to 7 hours per day. Position may require lifting of up to 50 pounds, bending and stooping, and sitting at a computer for long periods. Visual acuity is required for reading text and computer screens and printouts.

Must successfully pass a background check.

Marketing & Special Events Director – Kent Memorial Library in Kent seeks an individual to 1) develop programs for adults that meet the Library’s mission and service responses; 2) market overall library services; and 3) oversee art exhibits. Strong oral and written communication skills are essential as is knowledge of the basic principles of marketing and promotion of programs and events. Creative thinking is vital along with a warm welcoming attitude. Computer literacy required; desktop publishing and familiarity with modern communication methods such as Facebook and blogs a plus. Bachelor’s degree required with marketing, PR, advertising, journalism or communications preferred; some public library and/or non-profit experience preferred; demonstrated experience in producing news releases, newsletters, flyers, annual reports and programs. Ability to work under short time constraints and meet deadlines while managing multiple priorities & with minimal supervision essential. Sixteen (16) regularly scheduled hrs/wk including some weekends with additional hours as needed for programs. Salary commensurate with experience.
