First-time conference attendee blogger: Call for Volunteer(s)

Posted by tbergstrom on February 8, 2010

Dear all,

Bryan and I have been contacted by the organizers of this year’s upcoming annual conference about having a first-time attendee blog their experiences to the official conference blog. While there will be others blogging about their conference experiences, they would especially like to include the perspective of a first-timer or two who can document the experience of attending their first national conference.

You could make as much or as little as you like of this, by blogging daily during the conference or just occasional deep thoughts. That said, your posts will reach a wide audience so this would be an excellent opportunity for individuals who are striving to meet others and become involved in the organization.

If you are interested, please leave a response below. I don’t have too much more info than what appears above, but if there are questions I’m also glad to try to answer.

Tracy

Posted by Bryan Loar on February 7, 2010

Editors are inviting articles for both the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011

Professional Panel for Students at the Pratt Institute

Posted by Bryan Loar on January 25, 2010

February 5, 2010

Please join ARLIS/NY for a candid discussion for students who are considering the field of art librarianship.

There seems to be an increased interest among students in art librarianship, while at the same time academic institutions and art museums are experiencing hiring freezes or are actively contracting the number of library positions. What are the options and possibilities for students eager to enter the field of art libarianship? Please join us at Pratt SILS, 144 West 14th Street, Room 213 on Friday, February 5, at 3:30 p.m. to discuss the current state of art librarianship. The objective of this program is to offer candid advice about the development of the field and to discuss opportunities, challenges and strategies.

A number of art librarians have offered to participate in a discussion that focuses on career support, advice, mentoring, networking and professional opportunities. We will also discuss the pros and cons of the current increase in internship opportunities. Brief presentations will be made by Ken Soehner, Chief Librarian, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Amy Lucker, Director of the Library, Institute of Fine Arts and President of ARLIS/NA, Lisa Ryan, Librarian, LIM College and Chair of ARLIS/NY, and Sandy Brooke, Director of the Marquand Library of Art and Archaeology, Princeton University. A number of their colleagues will also attend to offer advice and mentoring. The speakers and their colleagues have volunteered to make themselves available for future resume and cover letter assistance and job seeking strategies. Dean Tula Giannini will also address the themes of career advisement and professional development issues and she will respond to questions and concerns.

The program will open with remarks by Karyn Anonia, a SILS student, who will pose a number of issues and discussion themes. Karyn will moderate the discussion.

This program, sponsored by Pratt SILS and ARLIS/NY, is intended to be practical, informative and lively. Discussion will be candid and it will be an excellent networking opportunity.

A reception with wine and cheese will follow the discussion.

Please RSVP to Karyn Anonia at karynanonia [at] gmail [dot] com
