Breaking Out of the Glass Case: Collaborative Exhibitions in Library Spaces

October 1, 11am Pacific – 12pm Mountain – 1pm Central – 2pm Eastern

Libraries can be powerful sites for collaboration with artists and art institutions. A wide range of visitors pass though our spaces every day, providing ample opportunities to connect people, art, and information. Our guest moderators – an artist/curator and a librarian – will discuss the ways in which they have created such interactions within their respective communities. Looking at case studies from public and academic libraries, this chat will offer ideas and insights to all who are interested in bringing art into the library.

Discussion Leaders: Lorna Brown, artist and independent curator; Laura Graveline, Visual Arts Librarian, Dartmouth College
ARLIS/NA Education Subcommittee contacts: Heather Koopmans (hkoopman@scad.edu) & Adrienne Lai (adrienne_lai@ncsu.edu)

This Friday: ARLIS/NA Chat on Branding the Arts Library

Don’t forget that ARLIS/NA’s Chat Series is offering up a great discussion later this week! I personally recommend “Marketing Today’s Academic Library” to anyone who is interested in user experience and branding for libraries. It’s a thought-provoking read and this week’s discussion promises to be every bit as interesting.

Technical info and details about past and upcoming chats at: http://www.arlisna.org/chats/index.html

In Search of Meaning: Building a Brand for an Arts Library

We will look at ways you can measure and build brand awareness for your library. In preparation for this chat, we recommend you take a look at Brian’s book “Marketing Today’s Academic Library” which includes helpful examples for library marketing and outreach. Although the focus is academic libraries, much of what is discussed may be applied to any type of library.

Moderator: Brian Mathews, author of Marketing Today’s Academic Library.

Friday, February 26, 2010, 11am Pacific – 12pm Mountain – 1pm Central – 2pm Eastern

  1. What is the difference between marketing, branding, advertising, and outreach?
  2. What is unique about Arts libraries?
  3. What do your patrons think about your library? How do you know?
  4. What types of marketing research have you conducted?
  5. What are some techniques and strategies you can use for building your brand?

Do we need all those databases that librarians love?

I am being asked daily if we want to renew databases that in the past it would have been unthinkable to cancel.  Now, since I do most all of my own research on medieval pottery in Google et al., I tend to be discerning.  For instance, what do you all think about finding auction sale prices?  Can it be done in a webbed environment only?  In other words, do we need to pay so many subscriptions? thanks, lucie

Looking for wiki contributors

As some of you may remember from earlier posts, Rebecca and I agreed to produce a wiki in conjunction with this year’s annual ARLIS/ NA conference coming up in April.  The goal of the wiki is to help newbies prepare for and navigate around the conference with information pertinent to first-time attendees not just to Indy but to the annual conference in general.  It addresses issues of interest to new and young ARLIS/ NA members such as:

  • who attends the national conference?
  • what kinds of events can I expect and what is the dress code?
  • what funding opportunities are available?
  • how can I find a roommate/ save $$ in other ways?
  • etc, etc, etc.

Rebecca and I have set up PB wiki space and laid out a basic outline of topics; now we could use your help adding content.

The wiki can be found at https://snapconference.pbwiki.com/

Anyone can be added to author content via the Request Access link on the page.   If you’ve attended an annual conference in the past, feel free to add content as you see pertinent.  If  you’ve never attended and are curious about topics we haven’t thought of, by all means add a comment or new heading and we’ll try to provide info.  We’d appreciate any contributions, large or small.

ARLIS/NA 2008-2009 Internship Award Recipient Selected

The Art Libraries Society of North America is pleased to announce Adrienne Lai as the recipient of its 2008-2009 Internship Award.  This prestigious award grants $2,500 to support a period of internship for a student preparing for a career in art librarianship or visual resources curatorship. In addition to the $2,500 stipend, Ms. Lai will receive a one-year complimentary membership in ARLIS/NA.

Adrienne Lai is presently a candidate for Joint Master of Archival Studies and Library and Information Studies graduate degrees at the University of British Columbia. She holds a BFA from the Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design in Vancouver, B.C., and an MFA from the University of California, Irvine. She currently serves as events coordinator and communications director for the Special Library Association’s student chapter at the University of British Columbia.

Ms. Lai is on a career trajectory for employment in an academic art library or visual resources collection where she can focus on reference services, creative approaches to instruction, and liaison and outreach work. Her background as a studio artist, art critic, curator, and educator is excellent preparation for such a career. She also plans to continue her investigations into research methods related to the visual arts disciplines and hopes to disseminate her findings through presentations and publications.

As has been the case in recent years, the Subcommittee read many stellar applications and is pleased to note that twenty-two different graduate programs from Canada and the United States were represented. While only one ARLIS/NA Internship Award is granted each year, ARLIS/NA does maintain a list of paid and unpaid internship opportunities; interested students and potential hosts are encouraged to visit the Internship Roster website for more information.

Congratulations to Adrienne Lai and many thanks to all the applicants who took the time to prepare an application!

Cathy Billings (chair), Art Librarian, Brand Library & Art Center, Glendale, CA

Greta Bahnemann, Curator, Knight Visual Resources Facility, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY

Robert Gore, Visual Arts Librarian, University of California Los Angeles

Rina Vecchiola, Art & Architecture Librarian, Washington University, St. Louis, MO

MemberClicks and ArLiSNAP

Just a friendly reminder – If  you are a member of ARLIS/NA, you can log in and update your profile through MemberClicks.  When you do this, be sure to “edit” your profile, and select ArLiSNAP from the list of Special Interest Groups available.  This allows other members to find you when they search for “ArLiSNAP”.  It also helps national keep track of how many members are participating in ArLiSNAP!  Right now… only 5 or so names are connected to ArLiSNAP through MemberClicks.  I know there are a lot more of us out there!

Recommended Blogs for Art Reviews – New ARLIS publication

ARLIS/NA has just announced a new online publication, Recommended Blogs for Art Reviews.

This is a really great resource, and many thanks to Joel Atkinson, Rachel Beckwith, Sherman Clarke, Ross Day, Jennifer Faist, Joy Garnett, Jennifer L. Hehman, Jacqueline L. Rogers, Amy Watson and editors Jennifer L. Hehman and Kraig Binkowski.

I’d love to see this list in del.icio.us, too. There’s actually a lot of overlap with links already in the ArLiSNAP del.icio.us account. Maybe we could come up with a tag to denote sites that are on the Recommended Blogs list? Or maybe we could work with the editors so that they could create a second version of their list in del.icio.us? It just seems to me that such a great resource should be shared far beyond the ARLIS/NA circle…

Discussion: Obstacles to Participation in ARLIS

ArLiSNAP meeting at ARLIS/NA Annual Conference 2007Dear ArLiSNAPers,

In the course of recent conversations with colleagues, I have been thinking about the variety of reasons that students and new professionals don’t volunteer more. With conference season upon us, there are ample opportunities to become involved – from volunteering in the exhibition hall, to recording individual sessions, to accepting elected & appointed chapter positions.

So, I’m curious – what is holding you back from volunteering within ARLIS?
  • Unclear understanding of position responsibilities.
  • Lack of sufficient funding.
  • Lack of time.
  • Lack of supervisor approval.
  • Geographic location.
  • Other -

If you are already involved in volunteering, think back to the time when you weren’t – what held you back?

While I know that many within our group are already involved different capacities,

how could we encourage more active participation at the ARLIS/NA level as well as at the chapter level?

Please respond below with comments. We want to hear your thoughts!
