Announcing the 2010 ArLiSNAP Pub Stop!

We’re pleased to announce this year’s Pub Stop event, scheduled for Friday, April 23. We’ll plan to depart from the Welcome Party at around 9pm and head over to The Barking Crab, located at 88 Sleeper Street about a 10 minute walk from the hotel. A map is included on our crustacean-adorned fliers (see above), which will be distributed at the registration desk and newbie orientation event next week.

For those attending the conference for the first time, the Pub event is organized by ArLiSNAP to promote general introductions and levity amongst members. We sincerely hope to see you there.

Reminder: Volunteer for the Web 2.0 Kiosk!

Hi all,

Just a reminder that we are looking for volunteers for the Web 2.0 Kiosk at the upcoming annual conference. Please see the post here to read more about this opportunity and view the sign-up link.

If you sign-up to volunteer by this coming Friday, your name will be listed for all posterity in the conference program. Tempting, eh?

Call for Volunteers- Web 2.0 kiosk in Boston!

Have some knowledge of web 2.0 features such as blogs, wikis and mashups? Looking to meet some new folks and become involved? If so, please consider volunteering for this year’s Web 2.0 Kiosk in Boston at the upcoming annual conference. The Kiosk is an informal setting for Arlisians to ask questions about various new and emerging technologies. Volunteers will assist participants as they spend some hands-on time exploring how they can take advantage of 2.0 tools and the benefits these tools hold for art libraries.

In the immortal words words of Rebecca Cooper, volunteering for the Kiosk offers the benefits of:

- Sharing your knowledge with others and adding to the art librarianship dialogue

- Expanding your network of ARLIS/NA members

- Gaining instruction experience in an informal setting

If this sounds like fun, please add your name and the time slots you’d like to volunteer to this schedule. Based on traffic in past years to the Kiosk, we’re aiming for 3-4 volunteers per time slot.

Can’t attend the annual conference this year and feeling left out? We’re also looking for someone crafty to update the posters and handouts. If interested, drop me a line at
tbergstr AT nd DOT edu

Tweaking Your Conference Sched

All,

I was finding that I needed more flexibility to add other events and to slightly tweak Shed event times.

Below is a link to info on one way you can export your calendar information from Shed and customize it to your specific needs. Furthermore, free online apps like Google Calendar, CalendarHub, and 30 Boxes offer reminders via text message (SMS).

Looking forward to seeing you at the con or over the interwebs,

Volunteer in Indy at the Web 2.0 Tech Kiosk!

Have some knowledge of Web 2.0 tools such as blogs, wikis and social bookmarking? Then the Web 2.0 Tech Kiosk wants YOU! We are looking for volunteers to share their knowledge with other ARLIS/NA Conference attendees. The Kiosk is an informal setting to ask questions about various new technologies; start a dialogue on how libraries are using them and have hands-on time with the resources. Volunteer staffers help their colleagues to question, learn, and explore what’s going on in the world of social software and how art libraries of every type can take advantage of these tools.

Benefits of volunteering:

· Sharing your knowledge with others and adding to the art librarianship dialogue

· Expanding your network of ARLIS/NA members

· Gaining instruction experience in an informal setting

Interested in volunteering? Visit the Web 2.0 Tech Kiosk wiki to view the time slots needed, at: http://artlibrarytech.pbwiki.com/Staffing+Schedule To volunteer contact Rebecca Cooper at rebeccacooper@gmail.com or Kristen Mastel at klmastel@hotmail.com with your preferred date/timeslot.

The Web 2.0 Tech Kiosk was developed as a way of introducing art information professionals to the tools and uses of Web 2.0 technology.  At the 2008 Annual Conference of ARLIS/NA, the Tech Kiosk  invited attendees to get hands-on instruction in setting up a blog, posting to a flickr account, subscribing to RSS feeds, creating a wiki, and more.  The goal of the kiosk was to provide a one-on-one learning experience, in which visitors could discover free tricks and tools and walk away with some hands-on experience and knowledge of how the world of art information is changing.  What we found was that one-on-one became many-to-many, and before long visitors were all asking questions that led to other questions and inspired new ideas for other kiosk visitors.  While the tech staff provided most of the answers, it was the questions that prompted the real learning, on both sides of the table!

ArLiSNAP Meeting at VRA in Toronto?

While ArLiSNAP is officially a special interest group of ARLIS/NA, we have members in VRA (Visual Resources Association) as well. Would other ArLiSNAP members be interested in meeting informally in Toronto?

Here’s a link to the conference:

Surviving the Annual Conference

Efforts are afoot to create an ARLIS/NA Annual Conference Survival Wiki, and we’d like your input to get things started!  The wiki is intended to complement the conference website and blog by providing a more generalized guide to the happenings of the Annual conference.  Whereas the website and blog contain information particular to each individual conference and locale, the wiki is intended to provide valuable tips on what to expect… and to fill in information that first time attendees might not know.

With that in mind, what are some topics/categories that you think a wiki of this kind should cover?  Here are some thoughts to get things rolling:

  • Which meetings are open/which are invite-only
  • Dress “code” (both general, and for special events)
  • Money-saving tips

… What else?

Tracy and I will take your suggestions into account and create the basic structure for the wiki, and will then open it up for contributions from everyone… we’re sure that there are some experts out there that can really help to make it a useful resource!

Call of Volunteer(s)- Pub Crawl Organizer and/or Connections Liaison

Greetings from Indiana!  We’re in full swing preparing for next year’s annual ARLIS/NA conference to be held in Indianapolis on April 16-21, 2009.  If you haven’t yet seen it, the conference web site is now online.

Going along with the conference’s theme of start your engines, we need to get revved up about the pub crawl.  We’re looking for someone local to Indy who can:

-    figure out a logical and easily locatable meeting place
-    plan us a route of pubs to crawl (including one with food…)
-    get word of the event out to any and all who might be interested

We’ve also been thinking about how we might use ArLiSNAP to promote events where our readers could get together and meet face-to-face.  To this end, we’d like to put out a call for a Connections Liaison (or two) to take up the responsibility of distributing info about opportunities for getting together.  These might include:

-    announcements of local ARLIS/NA chapter or student group meetings
-    info on continuing education opportunities or lectures
-    any other info on events that would facilitate us getting to know one another on a greater frequency than once a year.

We’re glad for any and all volunteers for either the Pub Crawl Organizer or Connections Liaison positions, so just leave a comment if you think you might be interested.

ARLIS/NA Conference Categories/Tags

There is a new tag called Atlanta 2007 ARLIS/NA Conference for all posts related to the 2007 conference (including travel awards, sessions, summaries, etc.). Also, everything tagged as Denver 2008 ARLIS/NA Conference is available by clicking Join the Discussion in the left column. Thanks!

On the Heels of the Atlanta Conference

social tagging session!Having just returned from the ARLIS/NA conference in Atlanta (which was tons of fun), I thought our group could chat a bit more about future possibilities for ARLIS/NA annual conferences.

I read blogswithoutalibrary, and just got around to Amanda’s conference ideas photoessay. The ideas she shares are incredibly cool – some would work well for ARLIS, although others probably wouldn’t fly.

In particular, I like the idea of an icebreaker or two (I know, icebreakers have a bad rap, but they are actually useful after the fact when you’ve made a contact), the loose-leaf “at a glance program,” and podcasting.

Do other ArLiSNAPers think these ideas have merit? Are there other engaging conference ideas you’ve heard of or experienced? Which ones would you like to see implemented in the future?
