Guggenheim Museum Summer Internships

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is currently recruiting interns for our summer ’08 cycle.  Our internship program places interns in different departments throughout the Museum including Curatorial, Education, Public Affairs, Registrar, Exhibitions Management, Special Events, Graphic Design, Finance and Information Technology Department that may be of particular interest to your students.

Internships
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum offers a variety of internships for undergraduates, recent graduates, and graduate students in art history, administration, conservation, education, and related fields.

The objective of the internship program is to offer practical museum training experience to individuals interested in pursuing careers in the arts and museum field. Interns gain a general knowledge and broad understanding of how a particular department functions within the context of a major museum as well as specific skills related to a particular department’s activities. Interns are assigned to a department based on their academic background, professional skills, interests, and career goals. Interns participate in the ongoing work of the department and complete specific projects or portions of larger departmental initiatives.

Potential internships are available in the following departments: Curatorial, Education, Public Affairs, Registrar, Library/Archives, Photography, Conservation, Film and Media Arts, Director’s Office, Development, Membership, Special Events, Visitor Services, Finance, and Information Technology.

Summer Internships
This program is open to third- and fourth-year undergraduates, recent graduates, and graduate students in all areas of museum work. The program runs from mid-May through mid-August and requires a full time, five days a week commitment. Every other week the museum offers a Museum Culture Seminar Program which includes: 1) field trips to sites such as auction houses, galleries, corporate collections, artists’ studios, and other museums; 2) discussions with museum staff from a range of museum departments; and 3) discussions of museum-related issues and publications. Attendance at all programming is required.

Stipends and Awards
Although academic credit can often be arranged through interns’ own colleges and universities, both Academic year internships and undergraduate summer internships are typically unpaid. The following stipends and awards are available:

Summer Internships for Diversity in the Museum Profession
As part of the Guggenheim Museum’s commitment to increasing the diversity of candidates entering the museum profession, the museum offers summer internship funding for two outstanding candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to museum careers. The internship is open to U.S. citizens only. The program encourages applications from African-American, Alaskan Native, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic and Pacific Islander candidates. Preference will be given to candidates from the New York City area. Please indicate on your application if you wish to apply for this stipend. Stipends are $2500 for nine weeks.

Guadalajara Internship Opportunity – Summer ’08

This request was originally posted on the Kent State SLIS listserv

My name is John Bragg; I am an independent historian living near Guadalajara, Mexico. I have a working library (500 lineal feet of shelf space, two large conference tables, two computers, and approximately 5000 books) that has become unmanageable. Most of my holdings are history books, but there are also classics, philosophy, the sciences, music, and poetry. I have very little modern fiction.

I would like to make the following proposal that perhaps could become part of a summer internship, an independent study project, or whatever you might think appropriate.

The student would travel to Guadalajara to organize my library. This would include, but not be limited to:

· Selection of a software program to catalog my books, journals, maps, monologues, etc.

· Enter library resources into the program

· Propose a search system that addresses my needs.

· Advise me on anything needed for the project

· Begin to catalog and organize the library.

· Train clericals to carry on the cataloging of the library.

I do not know how long such a project would take, but I would prefer to accomplish it in one nonstop effort, most likely during the summer break.

I would be prepared to provide:

  • Transportation to Guadalajara and return.
  • A Stipend and living expenses.
  • Housing in a private guesthouse on our property with maid service.
  • Free time to explore Mexico.
  • A clerical person/s to handle “secretarial” chores.

My wife and I have lived in Mexico for almost twenty years and find this area very tranquil and beautiful. Our home is located in the village of Ajijic on Lake Chapala, just south of Guadalajara. I believe anyone would find the working atmosphere and ambiance of our home conducive to good work and pleasant days. The student/s would have the use of the gardens, tennis court, Jacuzzi, and pool.

If this project were too complex for one person, I would consider a team of two. I am open to any recommendations or modifications to the project proposal you might have.

Please let me know if you have any questions or interest.

Respectfully yours,

John E. Bragg
