Call for ARLIS/NA & VRA Career Mentoring Applicants

It is open to ARLIS/NA and VRA members, and is free of charge.
We are calling for mentor applicants as well as mentees.
The workshop is the catalyst for a year-long Career Mentoring Program, the purpose of which is to provide training tools necessary to create and maintain a successful mentoring relationship. Selected applicants will be paired with a partner from their respective professional association(s) with similar interests, time commitment requirements, and geographic location (when possible). Both partners participate in a self-directed, year-long program based on shared goals.
This program is for you if you:
- are interested in gaining additional perspectives on professional issues
- want to set goals and define your professional working relationship with another colleague
- are capable of communicating on a regular basis with your partner
- can commit to a year-long project
Members of the subcommittee will maintain contact with the mentoring pairs throughout the year to advise and trouble-shoot if needed.
Space in this competitive program is limited. Participation in the 4-hour workshop at the annual conference is mandatory. Due to the nature of this program, we cannot accommodate walk-in participants at the conference workshop.

The Conference Mentoring Program is open to all ALA members and is designed to connect a first time conference attendee with a ‘seasoned professional’ who can help them navigate the ALA Annual Conference. Friday, April 23 from 8 a.m. to Noon
This four-hour workshop will be modeled on the successful 2005 ARLIS/NA Mentoring Program workshop led by Margaret Law. The workshop will feature an introduction to mentoring, viewing of the 2005 presentation on DVD, discussion, role-playing, and breakout sessions with mentor/mentee pairs. Characteristics of mentors, mentees, and the mentoring relationship; methods of communication; and benefits and potential pitfalls of mentoring will be discussed.
In order to facilitate optimal matching of mentor/mentee pairs, a short application form must be submitted prior to the annual conference.

Mentoring at ALA Annual

Applications received after May 6th will be accepted with the understanding that mentor/mentee matches will be made based on the availability of a mentor or mentee.

The ARLIS/NA Professional Development Committee invites members to apply for the year-long Mentoring Program, to commence at the annual conference in Denver. Please note: Attendance at the free Mentoring Program workshop, scheduled for Fri. May 2, 8-12 a.m., is mandatory for participation in the year-long program. Workshop facilitators Heidi Hass and Tony White will work with mentor/mentee pairs to define responsibilities, refine expectations and goals, and set the groundwork for a successful mentoring relationship.

Whether you are a seasoned ARLIS/NA conference veteran or a first (or second) timer, you have the opportunity to participate in the Denver Conference Mentor Program. If you are attending your first conference and are just beginning to develop your ARLIS network, the Mentor Program provides you with an experienced ARLIS/NA member to show you the ropes and introduce you to new colleagues. For ARLIS/NA veterans, this is a fine opportunity to make a significant impact in the Society on a personal level.
Those requesting mentors will be matched with those volunteering to serve as mentors by the Program Coordinator, based on information drawn from the application form. Both mentors and their newcomers will be notified before the conference.
Mentors are expected to contact their mentees prior to the conference, meet with their mentee the first or second day at the conference, discuss the structure and workings of the Society, give conference-attending tips, and introduce their mentee to new colleagues whenever possible during the conference.
Please note that the Denver Conference Mentor Program is separate from the year-long mentoring program and workshop.

Read below for a description of the mandatory conference workshop which kicks off the program, and then Sign Up Here!
The ARLIS/NA year-long Mentoring Program will commence with a free workshop at the Atlanta conference on Thursday, April 26, 1-5 p.m. The workshop, facilitated by V. Heidi Hass and Tony White, will focus on participants in the program and will give guidance on the mentor/mentee relationship throughout the following year.
I was fortunate to participate in last year’s program, and the experience provided a wonderful opportunity to connect with another professional. This year promises to be an invaluable extension of the program.
I would encourage all ARLIS/NA members, no matter your level of experience in the field, to sign up. The committee does a very good job of matching participants to the best of its ability. Remember that you don’t have to have had decades of experience in the field in order to share your insight. The organization grows when all members share their experiences, and mentors can expect to learn equally from their mentees throughout the process.

Librarians from all types of libraries, with various specializations have volunteered to help you make your resume shine!
How does it work? Reviewers meet with a job seeker for 30 minutes and give constructive advice on how to improve your resume and/or cover letter. ASPP launches its Mentoring Program for Students
On October 24th and October 25th ASPP is launching its Mentoring Program through its chapters in Washington D.C. and Chicago respectively.
The program which is entitled “Expose Yourself to Careers in the Photo and Visual Media Industry”, is aimed at students who are looking for a career as an image professional. ASPP members represent a true cross section of the image industry, whose jobs specialties include photo research, editing, licensing, creating, archiving, publishing, as well as photography itself. The concept of this mentoring program was born earlier this year when the board considered a new way to fulfill ASPP’s mission of sharing our knowledge through education.
