The Summer Educational Institute for Visual Resources and Image Management (SEI) is an annual, intensive workshop covering a range of basic and advanced topics for professionals working with image collections. It is jointly arranged by ARLIS/NA and VRA. SEI 2011 will be held at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM, June 7-10, 2011.

The Samuel H. Kress Foundation is offering five SEI scholarships of $650 apiece to help offset costs of tuition, room, and incidentals. Applications will be accepted from January 3, 2011 through February 11, 2011. Recipients will be notified no later than March 20, 2011.

OVGTSL 2010 Annual Conference Student Scholarship Announcement

Application deadline: April 23, 2010

OVGTSL offers THREE scholarships every year to attend the organization’s annual conference. Any full or part-time Library and Information Science undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in either on-campus or distance learning courses at one of the three ALA-accredited library schools represented in our organization is eligible to apply. The three ALA-accredited library schools are the University of Kentucky, Indiana University, and Kent State University.  One student from each school will be selected to receive a scholarship. The scholarships include the cost of registration (which includes meals during the conference) and lodging for up to two nights.  Applicants should submit a brief resume and a short statement (ca. 250 words) summarizing your interest in attending this conference.  The scholarship recipients will be asked to write a short statement about their conference experience to share with OVGTSL in the conference newsletter.

Gordon M. Conable Conference Scholarship

Applications for the 2010 Gordon M. Conable Conference Scholarship are due April 16, 2010. Sponsored by the Freedom to Read Foundation (FTRF), the scholarship will enable a library school student or new professional to attend ALA’s 2010 Annual Conference (June 24–29 in Washington, D.C.)

The scholarship provides for conference registration, transportation, housing for six nights and six days per diem. In return, the recipient will be expected to attend various FTRF and other intellectual freedom meetings and programs at conference, consult with a mentor/board member and present a report about their experiences. The 2010 Conable Scholarship recipient also will attend the LeRoy C. Merritt Humanitarian Fund’s 40th Anniversary Gala, scheduled for Monday, June 28 at the Folger Shakespeare Library.

The award will be announced in May.

Students currently enrolled in a library and information studies degree program and new professionals (those who have worked in librarianship for three years or less) are eligible to receive the Conable Scholarship. Those interested must submit an application that includes two references and an essay detailing their interest in intellectual freedom issues. Applicants also are asked to attach a résumé, particularly those who are working professionals. If the recipient is already registered for ALA’s Annual Conference, he or she will have the conference fee refunded.

ARLIS/NA Mountain West Chapter Travel Award

To ARLIS Mountain West chapter members:

AASL CONFERENCE STUDENT TRAVEL AWARD

Purpose:
The conference award is intended to introduce library school students, interested in a career in architecture school librarianship, to the membership and activities of AASL through attendance at the organization’s annual conference. The conference will be in New Orleans, Louisiana, March 4-7, 2010

Award Amount:

1. $500. for travel expenses (given in the form of a check from AASL to the recipient after the post-conference report is received following the annual meeting)
2. Waiver of the annual meeting registration fee (at the student rate)
3. Waiver of annual AASL dues for a period of one year

Eligibility:
Students who are currently enrolled in an ALA accredited graduate library school program or have recently graduated (within 12 mos. of graduation) are eligible for the award.

Guidelines:

  • Applicants must submit a completed application form, accompanied by a current résumé, to the Award Committee by the specified closing date
  • Recipients of the award must confirm in writing (e-mail will suffice) that s/he is able to meet the requirement of full conference attendance
  • Recipients of the award will submit a brief post-conference report for posting on the AASL website. The report should outline conference activities and experiences and include an account of how the award supported professional development goals
  • In a year in which no suitable applications are received, or if AASL funds are insufficient, the grant will not be awarded

ARLIS/SE Professional Development Travel Award: Call for Applications


Purpose: The Award’s purpose is to cultivate a talented, dedicated, and educated group of professionals for the ARLIS/NA organization as well as the ARLIS/SE chapter. Funds from this award may be used to pay for travel, lodging, registration and meals associated with professional development activities at the annual ARLIS/NA conference.

Eligibility: Applicants must currently reside in the geographic area served by the ARLIS/SE chapter (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, and the U.S. Virgin Islands). Membership in ARLIS/SE and ARLIS/NA at the time of application is not required, although preference will be given to current ARLIS/SE members. Applicants must also currently be either employed in the field of art librarianship and/or visual resources curatorship, or enrolled in an educational program leading to a graduate degree. Current students, individuals beginning their professional career within the field of Art Information in the past five years, and paraprofessionals who are becoming active in ARLIS/NA or ARLIS/SE for the first time may be included. Any individual meeting these criteria may apply for the award; however first-time attendees are given preference. Recipients of the award may not reapply in future years.

Application Requirements: Applicants must submit a cover letter electronically to Sarah Carter addressing the following: 
1. Their history of involvement within the field of art librarianship and/or visual resources curatorship.
2. Professional development benefits expected from attendance at the ARLIS/NA annual conference.
3. An estimate of expenses that they will incur (hotel expenses, airline fees, conference registration, etc).
Students: Please also include name, address, telephone, and email of one professional reference able to address your professional achievements.
Professionals: Please also include name, address, telephone, and email of one academic reference able to address your scholastic achievements.

Application Deadline & Recipient Notification: Applications must be received by midnight on Saturday, February 15th, 2009. The winner will be contacted by March 1st, 2009.

Award Recipient Duties: The travel award recipient is expected to:
1. Participate in the ARLIS/NA Conference Networking program (if they have not previously done so).
2. Attend the ARLIS/SE Chapter meeting at the annual ARLIS/NA conference.
3. Submit a written report on his or her conference activities within one month of the conference.
This report should be submitted to the ARLIS/SE webmaster to be posted on the ARLIS/SE webpage.

Award Amount & Disbursement: The award amount is determined at the Fall ARLIS/SE conference based on yearly donations to the chapter’s fund. On November 7th, 2008 the ARLIS/SE membership voted to award $500 to one applicant for the 2009 conference in Indianapolis. ARLIS/SE will disburse the full amount of the award to the recipient via check two weeks before the conference begins. One-year memberships at the individual level to both ARLIS/NA and ARLIS/SE (additional value of $120 [ARLIS/NA] and $15 [ARLIS/SE] as of 1/2009) are also included for recipients who have not previously joined either organization. ARLIS/SE will disburse payment of these funds directly to these organizations. No funds will be disbursed if a suitable award recipient cannot be identified from applications received by the stated deadline.

SLA Travel Grant for non-G8 Librarian

The Division of Museums, Arts and Humanities (MAHD) of SLA will reimburse travel and accommodation expenses up to $2,000.00 US for a professional librarian from a non-G8 country to attend the SLA Annual Conference. Lois Swan Jones Professional Development Award

ARLIS Texas Mexico members voted at this year’s business meeting to fund one award at $500 to assist travel to the ARLIS/NA conference in Denver, Colorado, May 1-5, 2008.

The Lois Swan Jones Award honors Professor Jones, Emerita at the University of North Texas, by underwriting participation of Texas-Mexico chapter members at the national meeting. While first-time conference attendees are especially encouraged, the award committee urges everyone with interest and need to apply. The primary criteria is that applicants not have full institutional funding. Previous winners are eligible. A description of the award, procedures for applying, and a list of previous recipients is forthcoming on the chapter Web site.

The deadline for receipt of applications is Friday April 18, 2008. The award winner will be announced on Wednesday April 23rd. ARLIS/TWIN CITIES 2008 TRAVEL AWARD

I am pleased to announce the availability of the ARLIS/Twin Cities 2008 Travel Award for attendance at this year’s conference in Denver, CO, May 1-5, 2008. The deadline for application is February 22, 2008. You must be a current member of ARLIS/NA and ARLIS/Twin Cities to be eligible. WILLIAM C. BUNCE / ARLIS MIDSTATES TRAVEL AWARD
The ARLIS/Midstates chapter is pleased to offer its annual Travel award of $500 for the Annual ARLIS/NA Conference in Denver, Colorado, May 1-5. The award is given in honor of William C. Bunce who served as the Director of the Kohler Art Library at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1966 to 1999.

1. PURPOSE:
The purpose of the William C. Bunce/ ARLIS Midstates Travel Award is to support a chapter members professional development by providing funding to attend the ARLIS/NA annual conference. Only ARLIS/Midstates Chapter members are eligible. Information about becoming a member of the international organization and regional chapter is available at the:

It is expected that the award will be made annually. The award will not be made however, if the chapter does not have sufficient funds and/or no applicants. Instead, any available funds will be rolled over for award the following year.

2. AWARD CRITERIA:
The Travel Award will be granted based on ARLIS/NA and chapter affiliation and on one or more of the following criteria. All criteria need not be met for the Travel Award to be granted.
a. Financial need
b. Level of chapter participation
c. First-time attendance
d. Contribution to the conference, e.g. speaker, moderator, recorder, committee member, and/or participation in the chapter business meeting.

3. APPLICATION:
a. Submit a letter of application indicating relevant award criteria, and how you will benefit from attending the conference.

ARLIS/Southern California Chapter Judith A. Hoffberg Travel Award

The Southern California Chapter of ARLIS/NA is currently inviting applicants for its annual Judith A. Hoffberg Travel Award. The award honors the Chapter’s founder Judith A. Hoffberg. This year $400 will be awarded to support and encourage involvement in ARLIS activities by helping to defray the costs of attending the 2008 ARLIS National Conference in Denver, Colorado.

Letters of applications are due by Friday, February 22nd 2008 and the winners will be notified by Monday, March 3rd 2008.

Eligibility:

1.)Membership. Applicants must be members in good standing of both ARLIS/NA and the Southern California Chapter [Note: Southern CA membership forms and checks can be sent along with the award application. For a copy of the chapter's membership form see http://www.arlis-sc.org/membership.html].

2.) Financial need. Only applicants who receive partial or no institutional funds towards conference attendance will be considered (We strongly encourage folks who do not receive full funding to apply) .

3) Eligible applicants include Judith A. Hoffberg as well as current board members (as voted on by the membership at the Cerritos meeting on March 29, 2006).

Selection will be weighted toward those applicants who best fulfill the following guidelines:

1.) Are attending the ARLIS National Conference for the first time, and/or

2.) Are actively participating in the conference in such roles as speaker, moderator, recorder, workshop attendee, etc.

Conditions of the award:

1.) Award winner must commit to some level of conference participation such as workshop attendee, speaker, recorder, local arrangements volunteer, etc.

2.) Award winner must submit a written conference report for publication in the Chapter newsletter, Canvas. This report will include an account of the recipient’s personal conference experiences and how the award contributed to his/her professional development.

The Southern California Chapter of ARLIS/NA is currently inviting applicants for the Student Travel Award. This year $400 will be awarded to support and encourage involvement in ARLIS activities by helping to defray the costs of attending the 2008 ARLIS National Conference in Denver, Colorado.

Letters of applications are due by Friday, February 22nd 2008 and the winners will be notified by Monday, March 3rd 2008.

Eligibility:

1.)Membership. Applicants must be members in good standing of both ARLIS/NA and the Southern California Chapter [Note: Southern CA membership forms can be sent along with the award application – membership is free to students! For a copy of the chapter's membership form see http://www.arlis-sc.org/membership.html].

2.) Financial need. Only applicants who receive partial or no institutional funds towards conference attendance will be considered (We strongly encourage folks who do not receive full funding to apply).

3) Eligible applicants include students registered in the MLIS program at UCLA and the MLIS programs at SJSU San Jose/CSU Fullerton.

Selection will be weighted toward those applicants who best fulfill the following guidelines:

1.) Are attending the ARLIS National Conference for the first time, and/or

2.) Are actively participating in the conference in such roles as speaker, moderator, recorder, workshop attendee, etc.

Conditions of the award:

1.) Award winner must commit to attending the Chapter meeting at the conference.

2.) Award winner must submit a written conference report for publication in the Chapter newsletter, Canvas. This report will include an account of the recipient’s personal conference experiences and how the award contributed to his/her professional development.

Please email or mail a letter of application to Skye Lacerte, Chair of the Travel Awards Committee by Friday, February 22nd 2008, briefly outlining your reasons for attending the conference as well as a short biographical statement listing employment history, educational background, professional activities, and how much funding you will be receiving from your institution (please limit information to a maximum of 2 pages). Winners must confirm in writing that they are able to meet the requirements of conference attendance. The travel awards will be presented to the winners at the ARLIS/SC Chapter meeting in Denver (date and place to be determined).

Association of Architecture School Librarians [AASL] Conference Travel Awards

Deadline for applications for 2 Association of Architecture School Librarians [AASL] Conference Travel Awards is fast approaching – Friday, February 1! Don’t miss out on your opportunity for travel assistance to this year’s stimulating conference being held in Houston, March 27-30, 2008.

The Conference Travel Award is open to professionals employed as an information or visual resources specialist serving faculty and students in a school of architecture. The Student Travel Award invites applications from students who are currently enrolled in an ALA accredited graduate library school program or have recently graduated (within 12 mos. of graduation). Each award is worth $250.

Merrill Wadsworth Smith Travel Award in Architecture

Funded for the first time this year and anonymously in honor of the late Merrill Wadsworth Smith. Merrill was an active member of ARLIS/NA serving as its President in 1991, and was the Associate Head Librarian of the Rotch Architecture Library at MIT.

The Merrill Smith Travel Award in Architecture will be unveiled at the 2008 Denver Conference and given to ARLIS/NA members who are actively, but not necessarily exclusively, involved with the field of architecture in visual and/or print collections including librarians,
visual resources curators, archivists, and students.

This is a wonderful gift to ARLIS/NA that will help us memorialize an honorable member and recognize those who epitomize the best of our profession.
