AMLISS Artist Books Event
Posted: September 9, 2010 Filed under: Opportunities: Events, Student Organizations Leave a comment »UNC Chapel Hill’s Art and Museum Library and Information Student Society (AMLISS) is sponsoring a “rad book reading for artists’ books. It will be like a book reading, except with visuals of the artists’ books accompanying the reading. I’m not sure if anything like this has been done before, so you should all come and make artists’ book reading history. Or just to visit the neat Sloane Art Library.” – David Parisi, AMLISS President
The event happens Tuesday September 14.

M-LEARN, a new student group at Pratt
Posted: April 30, 2007 Filed under: Museum Librarianship, Museums, News, Student Organizations Comments OffWe are pleased to officially announce M-LEARN, a new Library and Information Studies student group at Pratt.
M-LEARN (Museum Library Education and Research Network) at Pratt Institution’s School of Information and Library Science (SILS) shall promote the professional and social growth of its members and support the School of Information and Library Science at Pratt Institution. It will provide Pratt students with the opportunity to explore issues relating to museum collections, development, maintenance, conservation, and preservation of the humanities, sciences, visual and performing arts. M-Learn will encourage professional networking within the fields of museum librarianship, visual and digital resources, achieves, cultural informatics and arts libraries, and will actively promote involvement in professional activities beyond the classroom through lectures, workshops, visits to local collections, special events, and liaison with regional and national associations and networking with New York City universities, museums, archives, and libraries.
M-Learn endeavors to explore and understand in greater depth museum librarianship in all of its form and function. It is necessary for students who are interested in the field of museum librarianship to have an interest group that will build connection, relationships, and lesions with professionals and organization in this field. The association will provide a vital outlet for the students to address the various issues in Museum Librarianship through network and dialogue. This student association will address the needs of museum libraries and information professionals and support the advancement of the profession, pursuing partnerships with other professional organizations, higher education organizations, and national forums. While advancing the social and professional growth of students, Pratt, and SILS, M-LEARN also offers members the chance to combine practical and theoretical experiences in museum librarianship with that of the collection, preservation, and exhibiting element of museums and libraries.
This association will offer students learning experiences first hand from professionals in the field. The association will prepare Pratt’s students for the upcoming realities in their careers and build relationships with other professionals already active in these fields. We plan to hold monthly meetings as well as monthly events. The aim of these meetings will be to discuss activities, events, plan trips to different museums, achieves, libraries, and have lecturers from various organizations, museums, libraries, and universities to come and speak. In addition, we plan a to create a website to post new, events, links, etc. and we plan to create a blog where students can continue to discuss various issues in Museum Libraries. Moreover, we will encourage students to join regional and national associations. M-Learn will also actively promote open communication between the Pratt community, museum and library communities and other organizations throughout New York City. It is vital to have an organization within Pratt for the students in which they can network, engage in discussions, attend lectures and participate in trips with other professionals in the field of Museum Librarianship.
Since Pratt is the first Masters in Library Science program in North America to offer a Museum Library Certificate, it brings to the forefront the growing commonalities between museum and research libraries evidenced by expanding roles for librarians in education and outreach, digital resources and services, and information systems. Importantly, its curriculum transforms the education of museum librarians by defining the full range of knowledge and skills librarians will need to advance the mission of librarianship in museums, art libraries and cultural institutions. All Pratt students who are interested in Museum Librarianship are welcome to join and assist in the establishment and continuation of this dynamic and vital student organization.
Sincerely,
Nicholas C. Jackson

ARLIS-STC – Students and Trainees News Jan/Feb 2007
Posted: February 6, 2007 Filed under: Advice: New Professionals, Employment Resources, Opportunities: Conferences, Opportunities: Events, Opportunities: Grants, Student Organizations Comments OffIn October the Student and Trainees Committee ran its regular event “An Introduction to Art and Design Reference Resources” which gave an introduction to online and print resources and answering enquiries in the subject. The day was a great success and we’d like to thank the speakers and our host the National Art Library.
Events for 2007
It’s the start of a new year and a good time to get a run down on some of the other talks, conferences and events that students, trainees and library assistants could attend over the next 12 months.
Finding out about careers
The ARLIS Student and Trainees Committee will, of course, be holding its popular annual event “Taking the Plunge: Art Librarianship as a Career Option,” which provides insights and advice on starting out and working in the sector. Past speakers have included representatives from a museum library, slide library, and the commercial sector, as well as a recently retired librarian, and a recent graduate. The event will be held on Saturday 3rd March at the National Gallery, London. Look out for more details coming soon on the ARLIS website and discussion list.
The Career Development Group of CILIP holds regular events around the country throughout the year. Of particular relevance is their National Student Conference, which offers the chance to hear from information professionals working in various different sectors and to network with other students and recent graduates of LIS courses. The one-day student conference was held last year in November, and the Group hopes to run the event again in 2007.

Another event that may crop up in 2007 is the open day held jointly by the Association of UK Media Librarians (AUKML) and the Industrial and Commercial Libraries Group (ICLG). This day is aimed at graduate trainees, first jobbers and library students. The day includes talks by information professionals from all parts of the workplace sector, offering tips on finding jobs in their area and talking about their working day. Past speakers have included representatives from the BBC and the Guardian, as well as law firms and Government departments.
Conference Bursaries
ARLIS offers a student bursary each year to attend its annual conference, which this year will be held at the University of Gloucestershire in Cheltenham, from 4-6 July. Other conferences of interest include the Digital Resources for the Arts and Humanities (DRHA) conference and the Computers and the History of Art (CHArt) conference, which have both offered student bursaries in recent years. DRHA will be held on 9-12 September at the University of Sheffield and the CHArt conference is usually held each year in November. The bursaries are offered by the AHRC ICT Methods Network and are available to UK-based postgraduate students who’ve had a paper or poster accepted at DRHA or would like to attend CHArt.

Finding out about LIS qualifications
If you’re considering applying to library and information courses, it’s worth looking out for a couple of events organised by CPD25. The group usually holds an event each year which provides information on applying to study LIS, with speakers from CILIP, UK Library Schools, a LIS graduate, and a head of service. The group also holds a development day for library assistants, aimed at those who are considering their options for obtaining qualifications whilst working. CPD25 events are provided in the first instance for staff working in the member institutions of the M25 Consortium of Academic Libraries, but non-members are normally able to attend at a slightly higher fee.

UCLA “ARLIS” student group seeking information
Posted: September 14, 2006 Filed under: Academic Librarianship, Student Organizations 1 Comment »Dear fellow ARLIS students,
There’s a small contingent of MLIS students at UCLA who are interested in art librarianship. Currently, our department does not have an official art librarian student group however we’ve informally gathered for organized tours of art libraries and meetings with art librarians. Our hope is to continue to visit libraries, organize events and reach out to more art librarians working in Southern California in the hopes of becoming a more “official” student group.
Which brings us to reach out to other fellow students involved with ARLIS. We would like to get acquainted with current student groups and to let you know that we exist too!
We are also curious to learn about your groups in general and find about your past, present and future events and activities.
How directly you are involved with ARLIS/NA? And if you are, what those involvements are or have been? Weve heard that ARLIS doesnt officially have student chapters like other professional organizations such ALA, SLA, etc. And wondering what the reason behind that is?
In the interest of possibly naming our group and possibly starting our own website, what are your groups’ names and websites (if applicable)? We are familiar with the AMLISS at Chapel Hill and the new ArLISNAP website. And we are also familiar with the website of The Student Affairs Discussion Group of ARLIS-NA based out of Richmond.
And we would like to see if anyone has any insightful suggestions and lessons learned from starting up a group at your university.
We would greatly appreciate hearing any word of wisdom you have to share and look forward to hearing from you. Thanks.
Sarah Sherman and Chizu Morihara
