Smithsonian Libraries Accepting Professional Development Internship Applications

The Smithsonian Libraries will award up to three paid internships for graduate students interested in working in research and museum libraries for the summer of 2012. The internships cover specific areas of librarianship, including technical services, digital projects and research, and reference and reader services. Below are the available projects. Applications close March 12th, 2012.

Projects for the Summer 2012 Program:

• Artists’ Books

Candidates interested in research, reference and reader services will work in the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden Library where they will address advanced bibliographic searching and developing exhibition ideas featuring artists’ books.

For this internship, an MLS graduate student with art background is preferred; class work or experience with cataloging/metadata. Exhibition experience is a plus but not necessary.

Qualified applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, hold a 3.0 GPA in their major, demonstrate interest in the research and museological activities of the Smithsonian Institution and Libraries and show solid writing, analytical and computer skills. The internships are offered to current students and recent graduates of accredited library programs. Interns may receive up to $500 dollars per week for a maximum of six weeks. Job Summary
The User Experience (UX) Department at the University of Michigan Library is seeking a talented and enthusiastic UX Designer. The ideal candidate will be able to create beautiful and usable interfaces, have a passion for understanding users, strong problem solving skills, and be invested in improving the library web experience. The UX Designer will focus on interface design but also take part in the full range of departmental duties, including user research/usability, accessibility, and web analytics. The UX Designer works in a collaborative team environment and participates in all stages of development – from concept to implementation.

Responsibilities
Interface Design 60%

• Create concept sketches, flow diagrams, wireframes, mockups, and html prototypes.
• Create complete visual designs and web-ready graphics.
• Conduct ongoing research into the development of new interface capabilities, enhancements, and user-centered design trends.

User Research 20%

• Design and conduct user research/usability studies using a variety of techniques (e.g. formal/informal usability testing, online surveys, card sorting, interviews, observations, focus groups, participatory design).
• Conduct regular web analytics to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Conduct web accessibility audits.

Project Management & Communication 20%

• Help scope, plan, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Communicate project priorities and goals with project stakeholders, developers, and library-wide staff.
• Create and maintain project documentation.
• - Participate, as needed, on library committees. May provide advice or assistance to other units within the University Library regarding user research or interface issues.

Required Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and training or experience in information technologies. An ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or an equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree (e.g., Graphic Design, UxD, HCI) and experience is required for appointment as a librarian.
• Excellent interface design skills with a strong understanding of user-centered web design principles, typography, composition, and color theory. Experience creating complete interface designs and web-ready graphics.
• Experience creating concept sketches, flow diagrams, wire frames, and mock-ups.
• Proficiency with graphics software and prototyping software (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, Omnigraffle, Visio)
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and contribute and collaborate effectively as a member of a team.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience designing and/or evaluating library systems or other complex websites.
• Experience designing and/or evaluating mobile interfaces.
• Experience with a variety of user research/usability methods.
• Familiarity with web accessibility standards and coding techniques.
• Experience with HTML/CSS and knowledge of more advanced front-end technologies.
• Experience with web analytics analysis.
• Knowledge or experience with SEO.

H.W. Wilson Foundation Research Award

This award of up to $3,000 supports research activities by ARLIS/NA members in the fields of librarianship, visual resources curatorship, and the arts.

Proposals may address the compilation and dissemination of information, translation of original scholarship, analysis of the professions, or the enhancement of access to information.

Eligible projects include those which result in original scholarship in the arts (performing, architectural, visual, etc.) or aspects of visual and material culture.

Qualifications:

Internship Opportunity
Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone Research Library

Program: Yellowstone National Park is seeking a library intern. This position will be full-time (40 hours a week) but the schedule is negotiable. Located just outside Gardiner, Montana, The Yellowstone Research Library provides service to researchers, park personnel, the local community, and park visitors. Housed in a new building, the library is home to a rapidly growing special collection. This internship will allow the successful candidate to gain experience in almost every area of librarianship, however the main focus will be on cataloging and reference.

Housing: Gardiner is a town of 800 people and summer housing in town is difficult to find Shared park housing is assigned for this position, the rent for which will be deducted from the intern’s bi-weekly pay (park housing roughly costs $175 – $250 a month). An automobile is required for transportation to and from work.

Qualifications: This internship position requires a student currently enrolled in an ALA accredited MLS/MLIS program. You must be able to prove that you are enrolled in classes for the spring and fall semesters.

Salary: The intern will be required to work a 40-hour week and will be paid a GS-05 salary (in 2011 that was $15.00/hour).

Duration: The internship will be for 10 – 12 weeks during the summer season.

full-time (12 month), tenure-stream faculty member. Depending upon

Position Description

The Frick Art Reference Library seeks an enthusiastic, highly organized, new library professional to fill the position of METRO Digitization Project Manager to manage the day-to-day activities of a recently awarded Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO) digitization grant. This project, Phase II of a digital collection entitled “Documenting the Gilded Age: New York City Exhibitions at the Turn of the 20th Century,” will digitize late 19th and early 20th-century exhibition materials from historically significant New York City galleries and artistic associations held in collections at the Frick Art Reference Library and the Brooklyn Museum Library. The wider dissemination of these documents will help researchers who seek to study and document artists, artistic movements, and the rise of New York City during the time it emerged as a global center for the international art market.

Responsibilities include coordinating the retrieval and preparation of materials at both institutions, working with conservation teams to prepare condition reports prior to digitization, coordinating a schedule for in-house scanning and metadata entry, performing quality assurance on digital files, and promoting the collection. This position will also assist with bibliographic record manipulation, record loading, and additions and enhancements to the Omeka online exhibition(http://gildedage.omeka.net/)

Recent graduate (or pending graduate) with a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science. Experience working on digitization projects; good communication and interpersonal skills; knowledge of best standards for digital capture, description, and preservation; active interest in emerging and open source digital technologies; proven record of successful project management and working in a team environment.

Salary and Work Hours

This position is a part-time 8 hour/week position for a term of ten months.

The salary is $16/hour. Work hours may be scheduled between 9:00 and 5:00 pm, M-F. Travel to the Brooklyn Museum is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Manages quality front-line library operations, including circulation, interlibrary loan, course reserves, e-reserves, stacks management.  This position also provides library orientations and instruction. Coordinates access to physical and digital collections by creating accurate metadata records in a variety of formats including MARC, Dublin Core, MODS, VRA Core, and other standards as appropriate.  The successful candidate will bring energy and an expansive vision to the Library, leading the effort to optimize metadata output and finding new ways to use metadata to expose the Library’s collections. This position is also responsible for serials check-in and other duties as assigned.  Successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in professional associations to further develop the library and the institution.

The Art Department is seeking a full-time Curator of the Davidson College Visual Resources
Collection. The Davidson Visual Resources Collection numbers approximately 78,000 slides,
approximately ten per cent of which has been digitized. The Curator is responsible for the
overall management of this collection, including planning, policy-making and implementing the
procedures to convert the critical portions of the remaining analog material into an all-digital
collection. The Curator supports the daily teaching and long-term research needs of the four art
history and four studio faculty, and secondarily supports other member of the college community
with digital imagery needs.

Responsibilities include database development, digital asset management and developing a strategic plan for the future visual resource needs of the department. Serves as a liaison with Instructional Technology and Media Services and the College Library as the Visual Resources Collection is made accessible to the larger College community via digital technologies. Additional responsibilities include administering the budget and training and supervising student assistants. Reports to the Chair of the Art Department.

The award was established to honor the memory of Gerd Muehsam (1913-1979), distinguished scholar, teacher, and art bibliographer, whose support of and dedication to ARLIS/NA was an inspiration to her colleagues and students.

• The paper or project must have been created or written during the preceding 18 months by a graduate student enrolled in an accredited graduate library program or in a post-graduate library school program in art history or a related discipline

Required Format

• Papers: The paper must be 10-25 pages, typed, double-spaced on single sides of 8.5 x 11 inch paper. The paper must include an abstract of 250 words. The title page must include a paper title, the name of the entrant and the institution attended, the name of the faculty member for whom it was written, and the course title. The bibliography and footnotes should follow an accepted format, such as the Chicago Manual of Style or The Elements of Style by Strunk and White. In addition, authors should inform the committee chair if their contribution has been published previously or is being considered for publication.
• Internet projects: If an Internet project, a 250 word summary of the project, its URL, the name of the institution and course for which it was created, and the name of the faculty member assigning the project must be included. It must also be accessible to all of the committee members for review.
• All applicants must include their mailing addresses, email addresses, and telephone numbers with their applications.

Judging Criteria

• Papers and projects will be judged on their relevance to art librarianship or visual curatorship, depth of research and scholarship, quality of organization, appropriate use of terminology, style and readability, and originality of thought or observation.

The Humanities Department participates in virtual and in-depth personal reference and instructional services to the students and faculty of the University of Colorado Boulder and specializes in services and collections for the humanities. Significant parts of the responsibilities of this position are research and creative work and service in keeping with the tenure standards of the University of Colorado Boulder.

Position Requirements:
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school by May 2012; undergraduate or graduate degree in art, art history, architecture, or related field or equivalent experience; coursework and/or experience in providing reference for the humanities or social sciences; awareness of national issues and trends in art librarianship services and collection development; coursework and/or experience with library instruction or teaching; awareness of relevant information technologies; demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively; strong interpersonal skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; potential for research, scholarly work and/or professional achievement.

Desirable Qualifications:
Advanced degree in art, architecture, or related field; one or more years of experience in an academic, research, or museum library; experience in collection development; direct experience incorporating digital technologies into art and architecture collections or services (such as institutional repositories or Luna Insight); reading knowledge of one or more languages other than English, particularly Italian, Latin, German, or French; familiarity with copyright implications for image databases; interest in working with underrepresented or at-risk undergraduates; record of research or professional service at the national level.

Appointment and Salary:
The successful candidate will be appointed as a full-time (12 month), tenure-stream faculty member. Depending upon professional experience and demonstrated accomplishments in scholarly activity, creative work, and service, appointment may be at the level of senior instructor, assistant professor, or above. Minimum starting salary is $48,888.
